I’m not sure of what breeds of dog get along with siamese cats, but I have a shih tzu/maltese mix and he is GREAT in an apartment…it really depends more on the personality of the dog more than anything though…is your cat good with dogs? It’s good that you have a kitten, that’s the perfect time to introduce a new dog to a cat…good luck!

Some larger dogs have lower energy levels than some small dogs, so size isn’t always an indicator of whether or not a dog will be a good apartment dog.  This Dog Breed Selector is a good place to start your search.  You answer questions based on what is important or not important to you in a dog, (such as size, grooming, energy level, gets along with other pets, etc.), and it gives you some suggestions that most closely match your answers.  You can then further research breeds that interest you.

Keep in mind that not all dogs match the breed’s standard completely…for example, labs usually get along fairly well with cats, but we fostered one who would have liked to have them for lunch if given the chance.  It’s a good idea to find more about the individual dog from the shelter or rescue before just assuming.  Many times they can tell you if the dog has lived with cats before, if it’s been exposed to other cats and its reaction, etc.  Plus, if the rescue fosters their animals in homes, they can give you more detailed information about the dog, (we have cats, and we can tell potential adopters that yes, this dog is good with cats, or this dog should go to a home without cats).

Most of the time if you go to a shelter they will have little signs on the cages that mention if the dog is house trained, good with cats, good with dogs etc. so that’s always a good place to look.

The breed selector @Miss Apricot mentioned might also be helpful.
