I was in the Army for 8 years!  I worked with the Navy briefly when I was in Iraq.  They were awesome people! Serving in the Armed forces is fantastic.  When I told my family I was joining they were very upset and scared for me for a couple weeks.  After some thought, however (and when they realized I wasn’t changing my mind) they completely came on board.

My sister just joined the Air Force this year.

Granted she left right before our birthday, so that kinda sucked.  But we are all VERY happy and VERY proud of her!

If you feel the calling to serve your country then do it, It may be one of the hardest things you could accomplish in your life, but the  self confidence  you will gain and the service to your country are the most amazing benefits in the world.

God Speed and Good Luck.

@mandy102:  Well, I was in college at the time and once I made my mind up, I drove home for the weekend to tell them in person.  It was in 2001- right after 9/11 so they were freaking out.  However, several of them were in the military as well so I knew they would eventually support it.

@mandy102:  Yeah, they weren’t happy.  I think a lot of it had to do with me being a woman, too.  They knew it wasn’t going to be easy for me

@mandy102:  Those reactions are common.  It’s tough.  When family members hear about “their little girl” joining the military, there is a certain stigma vs. it being their male family member.  Consider it the first of many stigmas of women in the military you will fight!  🙂  It’s a great journey.

as a sailor of 3 years and a soon-to-be bride, i’d say go for it! I’ve really enjoyed my time in the Navy; I’ve met alot of awesome shipmates and hav been in a few neat places! If I had the wherewithal, i’d reenlist, but Mr. NaijaPuertoDorian is also Navy, and his career seems to be going better than mine so he will be the “careerist” of the family. If you need any advice, just holler!

I’m still in! I’m an active duty Fire Controlman. We put warheads on foreheads (just kidding), but we maintain the fire control radars, missiles, and combat display systems, to put it bluntly
