I’m 31 weeks and this morning as I lay in bed I felt rhythmic regular fetal movements unlike anything I’ve felt before, it went on for a good 5 minutes like a pulsing drum beat, I even woke my Husband up to feel because baby has never done anything like that before.
From what I’ve read it could have been hiccups or even practice breathing? We were a little concerned that baby might be in distress! We have a doppler and his heartbeat was strong, a little fast I think.
How can you tell the difference between hiccups and practice breathing and when to be concerned?

I’m 33 weeks and I think the movements were just hiccups. My ultrasound tech said the breathing practice usually lasts 20-30 seconds at a time. I wouldn’t worry especially if the movements are rhythmic, but a phone call to your doc might put your mind at ease. Definitely go to labor and delivery if you don’t feel any fetal movements for 24 hours.

Sounds like hiccups to me – babies hiccup in the womb when they’re swallowing the amniotic fluid and practicing breathing. It’s completely normal – my little guy gets them 1-2 times a day in the womb and I started feeling them in the beginning of the third trimester.

Mine is hiccupping now 🙂 feels just like you describe, a little drum beat. Oh, just stopped. Nothing to worry about.
