to make sure to use your credit card portal of a points portal that allows you to earn points that turn into free money! It costs nothing, but you get lots of free stuff! (it doesnt work for all sites, but many of the largest ones)

I always check if my airline rewards account has a partnership with the store. Log in, click through the airline and I get miles!
I use the website www.retailmenot.com. People post codes there so you just enter in the company's name and see what pops up! I've saved tons using it. Also if you're planning to buy something from a specific store, sign up for their emails and they normally send you discount codes.
I agree that this tip is very useful! I've saved a ton by doing a simple online search for coupons before checking out.

I always check for coupon codes, and another bee turned me onto ebates.com. You log in through them and you get a certain percentage back from purchases at each site (if they're listed with them) and there are coupons there too. It's fantastic!
@bakerella: My FI saved a few hundred bucks on my engagement ring going through ebates!

With Black Friday, Cyber Monday and all the other reasons we have for shopping, I'd like to share a little of my knowledge with my fellow bees:
Don't ever, ever, EVER buy something from a store online without doing a google search for coupon codes first!!
I have saved so much money by searching for coupon codes before finishing a purchase! For example, last year I bought the bulk of my family xmas gifts at Kohls.com - did a google search for "kohls coupon codes" and wound up saving an extra 20% on top of the cyber monday prices!
Obviously it doesn't work for all sites - especially smaller ones - but it never hurts to try!!
