It is a full-time teaching program for undergrads to do after graduation. The time is coming up for me to secure a job and I wanted to know if anyone on this board has done it or knows someone who has talked about it. Through Google, I have found that it is not the best teaching program to go into but unfortunately I cannot do Teach for America.

I know a few people who have done it. It doesn’t pay very much. I think you only get a stipend, rather than a salary like with TFA. That’s about as much as I know about it. The people I know who did City Year did enjoy it, though!

After I finished school I worked in a public school for a year doing tutoring, classroom aide work, etc. through Americorps (sounds like it might be a similar program to City Year).
It made a lot of sense at the time since I wasn’t 100% sure I wanted to go into education, and that year of experience confirmed it for me. Yes, it was not the best pay (Americorps offers a stipend as well) but I feel it was a good stepping stone before going back to school again for my teaching certification. I won’t get into the TFA debate (haha) but the Americorps year was absolutely the way for me to go rather than through TFA.

My sister did City Year! Later she did Teach for America, too.
She made very little money but it was meaningful work. You are supposed to live at the same economic status as the people you serve (not very high, that is).
It was stressful but she enjoyed it!
