I've been told that when I get my marriage lisence, I'll get a packet of information on how to do it. But it may vary by state.
i have no clue about the process either, but i have the same questions! Just wanted you to know that you're not alone and that it's not a dumb question!!
Your marriage license is your evidence of Being Mrs. HisLastName and with the marriage license you go through all of your stuff and start changing it over to assume his last name - drivers license, banking, health cards etc.
This is how it works in Canada - I assume that it would be the same there but you can go on to your gov't website to get the info.
In Colorado, you go to social security first with your marriage license (I got it a week after the wedding). At social security, I needed to take my old social security card and my marriange license. Then I went to the DMV. I needed the marriage license, the temporary copy of my social security card, and my old license. After you get your social security card and drivers license back, you can change your name with all your bank accounts and other accounts.
@Future Mrs Martin & MissAsB - Thanks for sharing! That doesn't seem too bad :)
Oh and I did actually change my name on my license in Alabama and they were great about it. I didn't want to change my name for a month on my old license so I just brought them my license from the other state and everything else and they were completely fine with it!
I posted a checklist on this thread:

I want to reiterate that you should get all of your credit cards changed before your driver's license, or you won't be able to use them when a store asks for ID.
I've read that it's important to do it after the honeymoon so you don't have any confusion with your reservations. I'm planning to use this site: https://www.missnowmrs.com/ (that I'm sure I read about on the weddingbee blog. :)
The one thing I know for certain is that if you've bought a new passport in the past 12 months, changing your name on the passport is free.
@vonnegurl you're right about waiting until after the honeymoon to avoid issues there.
I think The Knot has a packet you can buy with all the info needed to change your name but I don't know that it's really necessary. My insurance agency actually gave me a wedding planning book and it provides a lot of information about what all to change and how to do it. You might look for something like that. Hopefully it will be free. And from the sounds of it, there are tons of online resources. But I definitely agree about waiting until after the honeymoon. Here in Kansas when we change/renew our driver's license we get a paper copy that is good until our other one comes in the mail and then slowly the ink starts to fade off so you can't use it anymore. It's supposed to be a valid form of ID but I know that airports won't accept it as valid and when you renew your license the clip the corner meaning it's not a valid form of ID anymore.
@MightySapphire: I actually changed my credit cards after my drivers license but I was allowed to keep the copy of my old one so I could show that as ID if I was asked for it (honestly, I am only asked for ID maybe every other month).

But when and how do you change your last name? I know you change it after you get married, obviously, but I was wondering if anyone could elaborate on the process for me. I'm wondering how long the process takes until you're legally "Mrs. New-Last-Name" Also, if you'd like to share the process of changing your drivers license, etc, that'd be nice too :) I know I've got plenty of time, I've just heard several people say it was a pain in the butt to do this, so I just wanted to get some of you bee's perspective!
Thanks :)
