I have done this. The wedding has 150 guests and from the looks of it, was similar in size. We bought different sizes and grouped them together but in close groups. We bought 100 25 small, 50 medium, and 25 large. It was not enough. I am looking for a picture of the room and when I find it I will post it for you.
Another option may be to buy a big bolt of chiffon fabric and pull it through all the rafters so it has an airy roof look. Then you could string the lights between them. Like in this picture except just straight across.

I like the idea that hotwings has. If you are on a tight budget you could do it for less money with tulle and it would still look nice. At least in the photo, it looks like it has a low ceiling and I would think paper lanterns would make it appear even lower.
I love that idea, just don't know if it's in the budget.
And the ceiling is kind of low, I didn't even think of that! That's why I already love this website! I'll probably just have to buy a few lanterns and do practice run and see how they look.
Thanks for the input ladies!
What about bringing the focus to the walls with colored fabric panels instead of the low ceiling?
I think you can do the lanterns and hang them at different heights (but not too low!). They would look awesome with that celiing. More is definitely better. I also recommend a variety of sizes and colors (unless you're going for an all-white look).
By the way, I searched high and low for the cheapest lanterns and found the best deals (by far) here: www.paperlanternstore.com. I also got a tip from another forum to buy mini-LED flashlight keychains on eBay (you can find them with on-off buttons) instead of the lantern LED lights - they're a lot cheaper, even if you buy two per lantern!
Another idea is the DIY fringe posted here:

Sorry, there are no users yet.
We are having a laid back BBQ reception. But I still want to make it BEAUTIFUL! I'm think hanging paper lanterns and white lights form all the rafters, but have no idea how many to do! Any one have any ideas on how many per square foot or something like that? I've been to a wedding where they had them, but not enough, it almost looked like an after thought.
Should the lanterns be bunched in clusters, varying lenghts..... Has anyone done these that could offer advice??
