Super random, but I recently moved and my fiance’s company hired movers to pack and move all of our things. Stupid me didn’t think about packing up my retainers and the movers must have packed them up. They were in a small case the SAME color as the wrapping material they were using..So my guess, they accidentally got thrown away.
I had braces about 6 years ago and didn’t wear my retainers quite as much as I should have anyways..But now I am worried my teeth will shift alot. I am 23 and hoping they won’t, but I have heard they will regardless of age, etc. I thought about getting another mold done and a new pair, but called and found out it would be $400..Ehhh…
Those of you who have had braces…do you wear your retainers every night? Have your teeth shifted from not wearing them??

I just recently had mine removed YAY!!! I wear my retainer every second night and so far no shifting.

Nope! i had my braces off back in grade ten. And never wore them. I would just try to squeeze back into them, a week before a check up.

I haven’t had my braces for about 11 years now. I had a top retainer that I never wore. My teeth are still perfectly straight. My orthodontist put in a permanent retainer though on the bottom row of my teeth. Still there and will be forever.

I had braces for 2 years in high school, and then wore my retainer all day, faithfully, for 2 years – and then at night for an additional year. That’s all my othodontist required.
A few teeth shifted ever so slightly a couple years later when my wisdom teeth started to come in, but I had my wisdom teeth out and they didn’t shift any more. That was nearly 20 years ago. My teeth are, as far as I can tell, have not shifted at all since.

I didn’t wear my retainer at all and my upper teeth shifted a little bit. They went from looking braces straight to natural-looking pretty straight.

To my knowledge.. the orthodontist asks patients to wear their retainers 24/7 so that the teeth can settle and “remember” their positions. After that.. it’s just nightly to avoid shifting. I don’t wear my retainer ALL of the time but do most of the time. I haven’t noticed any shifting.
If I were you I would certainly get new molds.. But, I’m just anal about having straight teeth.
I guess it really just depends how long ago you had your braces removed.

No, I had retainer wires glued on my teeth. In 10 years only one time has a portion popped off and I still haven’t gotten it fixed and my teeth are the same. Trust me the best idea ever! I would hate to wear a retainer every night!

I never wore mine… maybe the first 3 nights only… i was supposed to wear them 24/7 … my teeth didn’t shift till about almost a year later, and they shifted a bit but not drastically.

It’s been about 10 years since I got my braces off and about 5 since I last saw an orthodontist.
I wear my top retainer about six nights a week and have a permanent one on the bottom. There’s one particular place in my bottom teeth where I think I’ve had a little shift, but nowhere else.

I don’t wear my retainer. I find it very uncomfortable and bed is supposed to be a comfort zone. My teeth have shifted 🙁 Unlike most people, though, I have too much space in my mouth. Myy teeth shifted, because of the space, so now I have some gaps.

I had a bottom wire, but it fell out while eating an apple..Haha, and the orthodontist said that it didn’t need to be put back in:( i’ll probably get a new mold, but they are expensive!! Yikes!

I have permanent retainers on my teeth so yes, I wear them every night!
I would definitely get new molds made though. My sister has removeable retainers and, although she doesn’t wear them EVERY night, if she goes for a while without wearing them, like a couple of weeks, they get really hard to put back in (aka, her teeth start shifting).

after years of braces in high school getting perfect teeth, i abandoned my retainer at 22, and now at 25 spent $900 on a retainer to close my gap back up before the weddng… Unfortunately, in my experience, go get the retainer! Easier to maintain than fix!

I had braces in middle/high school for 4 years. Had a slight overbite and had to wear headgear at night…ugh. Lol. My teeth really didn’t look bad at all, but apparently they were haha. Looking back, I WISH I would have worn my retainers for longer. I think what stopped me from wearing them longer was that they just seemed so gross to me. I wore them at night, but not during the day because I hated how they made me sound. I eventually stopped wearing them after they no longer stayed put on my teeth. If I had worn them for longer stretches of time, like a couple hours after school, in addition to at night, they probably would have fit me for longer…and would have worked better in the end. I really wanted to and wished I had gotten those “permanent” ones.
My teeth have definitely shifted (I guess this would be about 10 years after), and I can’t seem to fit my teeth together perfectly. It’s really annoying…especially with a little OCD! 🙁 I seem to grind/clench my teeth a lot…maybe because I am “trying” to fit them together again??? I don’t know. They look fine, but it looks like the top ones have shifted down a bit, and again, my bite is not “even.” If you have indeed lost your retainers, I would definitely buy another set! Or get the permanent ones! My SO had braces in high school, but just recently did Invisalign. What’s the saying? A stitch in time saves nine. Or $400 now versus $4000+ later for Invisalign?? (Eek)
Good luck! 🙂
ETA: One factor that may have caused some movement in my teeth is the fact that I got my wisdom teeth out a couple years after I got my braces off. I do think that that may have something to do with the shifting. Granted, I should probably have worn my retainers from age 16-20 or older, keeping the teeth in place both before and after the wisdom teeth were taken out.
