I've never had my ears pierced!  When I was a kid, my mom said wait til you are 13.  When 13 rolled around, I was too chicken and didn't care anymore.  Then, in later years, I didn't want to bother with having to buy and/or coordinate one more accessory.

I was thinking it would be fun in this new engaged/soon to be married season to make the leap and do it!  I have a birthday 10 months before my wedding and was thinking that would make for a fun/themed b'day party.  And, I'd think 10 months is ample time for me to get used to the piercings and find some fabulous earrings for the big day.

Any thoughts, words of advice, etc.??

Or, should I just abandon the idea and keep things simple and hole free! ;)

I would say go for it!  Earrings can be such a great enhancement or statement to your dress.  DEFINITELY give yourself ample healing time - mine got infected horribly (it turned out I needed to be pierced with 24K gold bc I was allergic to the other metal) and mine were a mess until we realized the issue.  But its not a huge process, go for it!

I hate wearing earrings. They're a pain. I also forgot to put mine in..

Plus I'm allegric to metals so I can only wear top quality jewelry and even than, only for a few hours before my ears turn red.

But, good thing for me: my fi actually doesn't like earrings either so it's good that I don't wear any.

But, sometimes I will see cute dangling ones and wish...but than I remember all the pain I go through to do it..and change my mind :D

I love earrings - I love how diverse they are and they really add to an outfit! (but I am biased I have 3 in each ear)

If you want to get them, then on for it! If I remember right it takes probably 3-4 months for them to heal properly before you can switch out your earrings, so you would have pleanty of time.

There are some down points though. I have to be really careful to get nickle-free earrings, and silver plated are a no-no, too. My ears are so sensitive the wrong earring can easily infect them.

As long as you clean them like you are supposed to and take good care of them, you should be fine. It only stings for a second. = )

I'd say do it! I've had mine pierced since I was 5 so I feel naked without earrings but if you've never had them done I'd do it for the sake of your wedding day. As KellyV said give them a bit to heal before the wedding in case you have a reaction to them or something. If you decide they're too much of a hassle after your wedding you can always take them out.

Def do it.  Get them pierced with real gold to start, I find that it helps them heal so much faster and without complications.

The pain is so minimal.  You won't regret it.  Plus, in the long run, wearing 'real' earrings are so much more comfortable than clip ons.

Do it!  I've had my ears pierced since I was an infant.

Word of advice though -- do NOT get yours ears pierced at the mall.  Go to a real piercing shop.  You're less likely to get infected and the piercings are likely to be more accurate.  It will be slightly more expensive, but worth it.

If you want to do it, pierce away!  I had three sets of mine done at Claire's (several years apart).  I only wear one set to work though.

What's you overall pain tolerance? If you're a wimp, then it's gonna hurt a little.  If your pain tolerance is higher, then it's no worse than a shot.  Sometimes sleeping on your side results in sore ears until they've healed.

If this is something you've always kind of wanted to do, then go for it. If you really haven't had any desire before now for pierced ears maybe start looking at clip-ons for the big day. It sounds to me like you're more in the first boat so I say "do it!"

I worked at a piercing kiosk and I'm with hotchiildinthecity, go to an actual piercing place. Not just because of all the things she mentioned but also because the piercing will heal better (completely different methods of piercing).

oh my goodness! you need to get them done =]. i have 7 holes in my ears (yep, 7 ladies, but total 7--4 on one side and 3 on the other) and while i wear two sets of diamond studs and a gold loop, I LOVE to accessorize my bottom holes. I think i'd die without wearing funky earrings. It's definitely a trademark of mine to wear really random fun earrings--enamel owls from anthropologie, funky coral pieces from Jamaica, etc!

DO IT! It'll be sore for a day or two but really not a big deal. You don't feel the gun--it just feels hot for a few seconds. Then throbs a little. A little sore, sure, but no more than like if you scratched your leg up.

Do it! I also say go to a piercing shop instead of the mall. I had my ears done at the mall as a child, and they are noticeably uneven! A piercing shop will do it the correct way (NOT with a piercing gun) so they will heal better. It barely hurts, too; it just feels like a hot pinch for a quick second.

And yeah, regarding pain...it barely hurts at all.  I used to have 4 holes in each ear (as a teenager, I let them close up when I got older) and I have my navel pierced and I barely flinched for any of them.  I believe it even hurts less with actual needle than with the gun they use at piercing kiosks.  It will burn for a while and be sore for a couple of days and then you'll be fine.

Do iiiittttt! I love waering earrings. I have 3 in each ear (and one cartilige) and don't regret it for a second, even though I don't wear my 2nd or 3rd holes at all anymore. I'm trying to find tinnny little rhinestone earrings for them for the wedding.

about the pain...I will be the first to admit that I am a complete and total wuss when it comes to pain! BUT, mine never hurt! I was so scared and psyched myself up (plus, I was 8). Then, it was over. Just like that! No pain! And mine were only a little sore for a few days and I could change my earrings after about 6 weeks. My second holes hurt even less. I have my cartilage pierced high on one ear and in the middle on the other and those were pretty sore for about a week. So was my belly button. But in all, I think it is worth it and you will love it!Plus, if you don't like it or it doesn't suit you, you can always not wear earrings and let them close up :)

I said go for it!  But only if you really want to.  Also, make sure you go to a clean, sterile place.  Research it heavily ahead of time - it's not a regulated industry, so there is a risk of infection.  Check out the Association of Professional Piercers to find someone in your area.

Also, you can have piercings that you essentially ignore after it's healed.  I've got several in each ear, and my nose pierced, and I change my earrings maaaybe once a month, and never touch my nose.  You have to make sure it's a good material if you're going to do that (mine are gold and titanium), but they're essentially "no-care" jewelry.  Most importantly, have fun with it!  If it's not fun, it's not worth it.  Smile

Oh yeah, and make sure they use a needle for it!  The piercing guns are known for scarring!

Thank you all for your great advice!!

I have a high pain tolerance (or so I think!), so I'm definitely not worried about the pain factor (like I was when I was a kid!)  Although, whenever I try to wear clip-on's, my ears turn BRIGHT red in a matter of hours.

If I make the leap, I will definitely go the professional piercing route (thanks for the great links and tips!)

    My main concerns are:

    1.  Wondering if I'm going to find earring shopping a pain (although, I figured I could just get a handful of 'goes with everything' type pieces).  It's just such an odd thing for me to think about incorporating into my life now (I'm in my mid-30's!)

    2. Having the hole turn into a sagging slit from wearing too heavy earrings (do you know what I'm talking about)?

    3.  Being super allergic and not finding any ones that don't hurt my ears.

Also - stupid question - but how do you take care of your earrings?  Do you clean them with alcohol regularly, etc?  (Just thinking about minimizing any irritation, etc.)

    @oracle:

    1. I love earring shopping!  The great thing about earrings is you can spend a little or a lot and still get something you love.

    2. I've had my ears pierced for 26 years.  I wear heavy earrings ALL THE TIME.  My piercings do not sag (haha) at all.

3.You're likely not going to be allergic, but if you are, it's easy to find hypoallergenic stuff.

    4. [gasp] I don't do anything to take care of my earrings.  I just throw them in my jewelry box.  I only have one expensive pair though.  The rest are from Aldo, Laila Rowe, H&M, etc.

Do it! I just did! ;) I had actually had my ears pierced before twice (both times I let them close after raging infections drove me absolutely crazy), so when I did it again this time (last month) I did a lot of research and decided to go to a piercing shop (instead of a mall shop or dermatologist, even)... and the experience is like night and day. No swelling, no bleeding, and very little discomfort. I also got the best after-care advice from the piercer, who really knew what he was doing (even doctors don't do this often enough to give the best advice!). A good shop will have great earrings that will work even if you have sensitive skin--mine are made from the same metal that you would have inserted if you needed, say, a rod in your arm: very little risk of infection or reaction. I, like a PP, thought I needed to be pierced with 24K gold (what I always used to wear in previous piercings), but any really good non-reactive metal turns out to be okay for almost everyone, and I haven't had any problems at all. I expect that once the hole completes healing (about two more weeks) I'll be able to use just about any metal.

Anyway after all the bad experiences I'd had I almost didn't want to pierce my ears, but I really wanted to be able to wear beautiful earrings on my wedding day. And now I can!

They could get infected .. but as long as you dip the back of the earring in neosporin that will not happen!

    So go for it.

@MsHymanRoth: my piercer told me to avoid Neosporin, actually, because the oil lasts longer than the antibiotic properties. Better to use rubbing alcohol on the posts if necessary once in awhile, but not while in your ears--too irritating.

My mom pierced my ears when I was probably around 2. I then got a second hole when I was 14. I love being able to wear earings. And it honestly does not hurt that bad. Just like someone pinching you. Just make sure you take care of them so they dont get infected.

Yay! :) If you're worried about the pain ask for them to pierce both ears at the same time. It just feels like a pinch & then your ears get really hot! Make sure you do buy the ear cleaning stuff though because the first month or so your ears can get a little crusty.

Good luck & I'm sure you'll love it!

Good luck! I have a needle phobia and managed to survive my ear piercing at the age of 20. :P  They don't hurt, exactly, they sort of burned and my ears were red for a while. But it wasn't bad at all.

I think thats a good idea. I had my ears pierced when I was around 1, so I never had the option to think about it lol. I had 8 ear piercings when I was in college, but now only wear the first hole. Youll love having your ears pieced, it really doesnt hurt.

Just a little update :)  I did it!!  Two weeks ago, went and had it done.  One hurt more than the other - but it wasn't bad at all :)  I went to a piercing shop and had it done.  I'm a side sleeper, so sleeping that first week was a PAIN (literally!!)... and soaking them in salt water a few times a day has also been a bit of an inconvenience (I'm supposed to do so for 4-6 more WEEKS),  But, thankfully, they are healing well and not red/irritated at all.  I bump them sometimes and it HURTS... I'll be so glad once they are all healed up and I can start wearing fun earrings!!  Thanks, bees! :)

I did the same thing at the beginning of this month. I also did mine at a tatoo parlor and it was a great experience. The piercer was very careful and four weeks later I have had no sign of infection. Keep up with the salt soaking because it really does make them heal faster.

I just had my ears pierced three weeks ago at age 24.  I went to a legitimate piercing studio because I wanted it done with sterile technique and a sharp needle would hurt less than a gun.  I almost fainted in the studio, I had to sit down.  It hurt A LOT more than I expected, but the pain is over immediately, maybe half a second.  The needle hurts a lot going through, but once it was in, I couldn't feel it at all anymore.  That said, I still can't sleep on my side without the equivalent of a hemorrhoid pillow for my ear.

I clean them twice a day, they are on and off itchy the first few weeks, but it doesn't hurt to clean and rotate them, except maybe it feels like picking off a small scab for the first couple days.

I am SO EXCITED about being able to wear pretty earrings finally!!!  I think I'm going to rent really really nice diamond earrings for my wedding day.  That said, I would never have anything pierced ever again.

I did it!  I had my ears pierced when I was younger but let them grow shut.  But I really wanted to be able to wear earrings on my wedding day, and hadn't had ANY luck finding nice clip ons, so I sucked it up and went to Clarie's in the mall and them pierced.  (I'm 30 years old!)  It hurt for a split second and that's it.
