Yay for like minded bees! Thank you for posting this. My wonderful doctor is from Haiti and I can't imagine how she must feel right now, not able to reach her family. It breaks my heart.
I feel exactly the same way. I am also donating money and encouraging all my friends and family to do the same. My family is from the Dominican Republic and had it been on this side of the island, I couldn't imagine what to do.
I will be making a donation as well. Many of my co-workers will be leaving later today or tomorrow to go down and give aid in the area.
I contributed to Red Cross through a link on this page:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2010/01/13/help-haiti
It also says you can make a text to donate and it would be put on your cell phone bill.
I donated through the Yarn Harlot to MSF/Doctors Without Borders. Their direct donation page is here.
I've also donated through MSF/Docotrs Without Borders. I used to teach a lot of Haitian-Canadians when I lived in Montreal since we have such an enormous Haitian community in Canada. Our Governor General (the Queen's representative in Canada) is also Haitian, and I saw her break down in tears on the news with her statement about the government's response to the crisis. My heart goes out to the people there and families around the world awaiting word of their loved ones.
I will be donating - either to world vision or compassion canada.. or maybe both.
This breaks my heart and I wish I could do more. I have been to Nicaragua 3 times on mission trips and they had a similar experience that Haiti is having now. In 1972 Managua, Nicaragua was hit with a 6.2 level earthquake that flattened the capital city. They are still feeling the effects of that one day, today. Poverty and homelessness.
Haiti was hit with a level 7.0
I feel nauseous.
I'm going to doate to red cross. Thanks for posting this, you have a beautiful heart and I pray that many people will find it in their hearts to help.
I just ordered a bunch of medical supplies from www.masune.com that I'm giving to a local school who make care packages to be sent to Haiti.
Here are two really really easy ways to donate-
1. Text "YELE" to 501501 to donate $5 to the Haiti Earthquake Fund. Yele.org for more info (Yele is Wyclef Jean's Organization to benefit Haiti).
2. Text "Haiti" to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross' Haiti Relief Efforts.
For both of these, you will recieve a confirmation text from the organization. Reply YES to the text message and your donation will be added to your next phone bill. It's a really really easy way to help. From what I hear, so far, the Red Cross has collected 3M dollars to help.
@Lovesthebear - thanks for this information!!! I just posted a thread about a friend of my family's who is missing... :(
My best friend and MOH is currently in Haiti and was in PauP when the earthquake hit. She is thankfully ok, but the hospital she works at would be grateful for any donations. You can donate here: http://www.hashaiti.org/
Thank you all.
I hear there are Haiti donation scams going around. Just remember to double check who you send money to.
I just donated to the red cross.
I tear up when I see the images on TV... I can't even begin to imagine what they must be going through. Thanks for the donation info ladies. FI and I will definitely make a donation-- every bit helps!
The Clinton Foundation is another good option, it is set up by Bill Clinton and acts like a meta organization, giving money to whomever needs it that second. I gave this morning.
if you google the texting to the 90999 - it comes up with what looks to be pretty legit information...
I promise my post isn't a scam!!! My MOH is working for Hospital Albert Schweitzer, and they are doing what they can for the victims. http://www.hashaiti.org/ There is also a blog that the managing director has set up that tells what they're doing. http://hashaiti.blogspot.com/
I just wento the the Salvation Army's website - and you can also donate there - through paypal or credit card (i prefer paypal)...
Oh another good one- Doctors without Borders
Thank you everybody - it's really powerful to witness everyone opening up their hearts!

I can't stop thinking about the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti - both for all the people there who were affected as well as their family members who live abroad who can't get in touch with their loved ones in Haiti.
That must have been the scariest thing to experience - I feel like it would seem like the whole world is just crumbling and ending.
It would be great if we could gather up some voices here to pledge to make donations for the cause. I think those people in Haiti, who were already living in misery due to political corruption and poverty, need our money much more than we do right now.
I pledge to donate $50 to Oxfam America. If anyone wants to do the same, here is the website to Oxfam America: https://secure.oxfamamerica.org/site/Donation2?df_id=3560&3560.donation=form1 . Or if you have a suggestion for another charity, please share your ideas!
If you can't donate anything...just say some prayers or keep everyone in your thoughts.
