    I’m 50/50 on this….

I have a good friend who’s pregnant, and they want to use the last name of one of our friends as their first name (Cooper). The problem I have is that the friend is a guy, and we’ve always called him by his last name. So much so that DH didn’t know it was his last name until we were doing wedding invites 7 years after they met and I addressed it to “Mr and Mrs Cooper” and DH was like “shouldn’t you use his last name?” I think it would be weird if another close friend in our group used that name as their baby’s first.

However, I’m also a huge hypocrite, because DH and my first choice for a boy’s name is my SIL’s maiden last name (brother’s wife). She changed her name when they got married, but we still see her side of the family frequently, so there’s a 50% chance that our baby will have their last name as his first. I already checked with SIL and she’s a-ok with it, but I realize it’s a bit weird…..

In the end, I’m usually on the side of “do whatever you want” so I guess I”ll stick with that 🙂

If it’s also a relatively common first name, such as Taylor, Tanner, Connor, Cooper, etc., I don’t think anyone will think that you chose the name because of your friend’s last name. You should be fine.

I agree with PP’s that it’s fine as long as it’s also commonly a first name.

Names you like are so hard to come by. I think if you find a name you love, nothing should stop you from using it.

I think you should ask them about it first. If they dont want to use the name, go for it. For instance, my maiden name is Clark and that’s what we plan on naming our son. If one of my friends named their son Clark (out of nowhere) I would be upset by it.

@SaraP2012:  I agree that you should ask them first! I love the name Graham but it’s one of my best friends’ last names and if she ever has a son, she plans to name him Graham. So obviously I would never steal her baby name because it’s very special to her!

@jules28:  Oh nevermind then! I would hope they wouldn’t name their child Graham Graham 🙂 I think they would be flattered! There are always those names that make you shudder because of someone you knew with that name LOL!
