    I think most of that should go without saying. Of course you’ll give things up or give in, but because you love them you are happy to do it for the benefit of the marriage, not your own benefit.

    In a general kind of way, I agree. I mean, it’s kind of obvious. No one wants to be a partner to someone who is prideful, selfish, and superior.

    But, in a lot of cases, I actually think many women could be happier people, and thus makes better wives and partners, if they were a little MORE prideful and selfish.

    But really, by prideful I mean have confidence and self-respect, and understand your own self-worth enough to expect your partner to respect you as well. And by selfish I mean engage in deep self-reflection until you have identified your personal needs and wants, and can then share them with your partner, rather than expecting your partner to magically know what it is you need.

    It is a cute article, but I feel like it belongs in a “Marriage for Dummies” book or something. I’m sorry it took her 19 years to come to these conclusions.
