- Wedding: August 2011
my wedding is nearly all diy for one hundred and… twelve people. well thats how many are invited.
anyway. i saw a tiki hut card box online for sixty dollars. i was shocked that a box to hold cards could be so expensive… so i set out to make my would. and it only cost me fifteen dollars…
first i bought a giant hat box.hobby lobby five dollars.
glue gun. hobby lobby two seventy seven.
glue sticks hobby lobby four dollars for fifty… i needed nearly all of them.
dollar tree provided…
two raffiaish brooms
one bambooish woven circular placemat
one bambooish stick rectangular mat
i also needed very sharp scissors and a hole punch but i already had those.
so i started with the glue gun. plugged it in to get it warmed up.
i cut the bamboo stick mat in two lengthwise as itbwas perfect height for my card box that way.
i cut the woven mat in half and then had to sew the corners back together because i just needed a slit.
so i soaked the woven mat in water to soften it so i could bend it into a semi conical roof shape.
I glued the two halves of the bamboo stick mat to the hat box like so.
I then started to glue small pieces of the raffia to the lid.and punched out holes so that I could tie the lid on.
I then glued the woven mat to the lid of the card box. I should have cut the hole in the lid but I didn’t. I did after I glued it on….
I cut off parts of the broom (only had one at the time) and startet to thatch the roof.
I also made a door for the hut 🙂
finished as much thatching as I could with only one broom to work with.
