I am wondering how long to allocate for pictures the wedding day (wheter before of after the ceremony i’m not sure yet). I asked my photographer, and he said 30 mins for the formal portaits and 30 mins for couple shots. I know that he knows what he’s doing, but he also in most of his work does day after/bridal/TTD photography sessions, which I can’t afford to have. I have him unlimited the day of the wedding, and i really want a wide range of photos (couple different locations – all w/in walking – and poses that you typically see in those additional sessions). How long would you guys leave for posed photography like this?

We took pictures before for about 1.5 hours (we drove 10 minutes away and did some walking so that wasn’t all picture time) and then we took about 30 minutes of pictures with our families after the ceremony.

Hmmm, my photog also said 30min and 30min. I think a portrait session can be as long as 3-4 hours, so if you have him unlimited, the only limiting factors may be 1) How much time you have before the actual wedding (accounting for how long it takes to get ready, get to the venue, etc) and 2) Not having him work so much that he is exhausted towards the end of your wedding…he might be unlimited for the whole day, but that doesn’t mean you should make him shoot 12 hours in a row 🙂

Right, I wasn’t planning for 12 hours 🙂 I know alot of people have him there for a long time getting ready, but hardly any of those pictures appeal to me (maybe one of my dress hanging somewhere looking pictureseque and another of my mom lacing me up…but that’s about it)

We didn’t take any pictures of getting ready. That was just pictures of the two of us at a different location than the place where the ceremony was held.
