Not sure about the "proper" answer but I tipped my makeup/hair stylist for the trial run.
The trial run should be booked with enough time to book another one, in case you don't LOVE what the first stylist created.
Definitely recommend bringing the veil, though, to make sure you like how the whole look pulls together, so I'd postpone the trial until you pick your veil.
If you're a bride who is planning on wearing the veil only for the ceremony & pictures and will take it off for the reception, you should test this during the trial to see if your hair style will look good once you take the veil off.
It'll also help you decide if you need the stylist to stick around to help you do this, and fluff up your hair so it doesn't look crazy after taking 25 bobby pins out.
I didn't tip because my stylist owns her own business. If I had gone, for example, to a makeup counter at a department store, I definitely would have tipped under those circumstances.

Maybe the dumbest question ever... do you tip the stylist when she does your trail hair/make-up run? Also, how far in advance should I do the trial? I just made an appointment but realized I won't have my veil by then. Oy!
