Etiquette Q: Should I tip a seamstress? She owns her own shop and she is the only person who works there. She gave me a great deal and altered a very complicated wedding gown in every area of the gown and a less complicated rehearsal dinner dress all for $150. Is it customary to tip a seamstress? If so, what percentage should I tip her if I am very happy with the results? I adore her and have had great work done by her in the past.

EMCasey: I tipped my seamstress. I don’t know if I was supposed to or not, but she did a great job with so many fittings and getting the dress perfect for me- including a last minute tweak with the arms of the dress being too tight that took it to the last possible day… She works in a local wedding gown salon but has her own business- they just charge her a flate rate for each alteration (like $25 if the dress was from them, $50 if not)… So I tipped her because she was so awesome- if you think yours was too & esp have had excellent work from her in the past I’d go for it! Maybe even send her a pic from your wedding day when it’s all said & done? I know mine loved seeing her awesome work in action & keeps a notebook with her clients pics…

Usually if someone owns their own business, you aren’t “required” to tip them (not that tips are ever required, but YKWIM?). If you have worked with her often and don’t feel like pure cash would be appropriate, could you purchase a small gift instead? Or even like a gift card for dinner in your town, etc.?

How much of a percentage is appropriate? I have decided to tip.

I would give a thank you note and a small gift 🙂
