I tipped my lady $10. And bought $80 worht of stuff. I know it's not much....but uh, if I could have afforded more, I wouldn't have had the free trial in the first place =]
I agree with the 10-20. What you could also do is find out how much people usually charge, or ask her how much she usually charges them tip the customary 10-20%.
Ooops. Really? I went to Sephora and had a make up trial. I didn't even think of tipping the artist (and I'm a very conscientious tipper!). I did buy $150 worth of stuff though.
Damn. Now I feel bad.
Thanks everyone!
@baffled111 -- clearly I'm not the best authority on the subject since I needed to ask in the first place, but I would think if you bought a lot of products and the artist got a commission on it, you probably don't really need to tip on top of that, especially in a store setting?
My case is a little different because a makeup artist is coming to my house for a trial, and I don't think she sells products (although I'm not really sure). So I'll definitely plan to tip her 10-20% of whatever she usually charges.
I completely forgot to tip my hair and makeup artists at the trial but I added it to their tip for the wedding. I would say 15-20% of what they normally charge is good, especially if they are coming to you.

Hey ladies, hoping someone can help a clueless bride out with some tipping advice!
For a free makeup trial, should you tip the makeup artist, and if so, how much?? I've never had my makeup done before so I have no idea what an appropriate tip would be, or if it's even necessary to tip for the trial. But since it's free, I feel like I should tip something?
