Depends. Is the chef who will be working your wedding the owner of the catering company? If so, then a tip is typically NOT expected for them. (but maybe the server?) I’ve worked looooots of weddings with a catering company, and the most I’ve ever gotten is about a $50 tip, and that was at a lavish, loooong wedding. ‘Course, it all depends on where you live, and what is the norm in your area. I’d think 20% is a bit much on the $1400 bill, regardless of the area, imo. Especially since it’s such a small event.

I think the best way for you to gauge the proper amount, would be to ask around to your family and friends or co-workers, to see what is the norm in your circles/area.

At $30/hour is a tip really necessary? Tips are generally for underpaid staff memebers who make barely minimum wage. $30/hour equates to a $62,000 annual salary…way more than I make!!!

@alphagam84:  @candycorn:  The $30/hr isn’t pure wages for them.  The owner takes a big cut – either to go toward unemployment taxes they pay for them, health insurance, etc., or just a finders’ fee (because they can).  I’m sure they’re getting paid about $12-20/hr.

From what I’ve read, you should tip the chef directly a set amount, and a catering manager directly a set amount, and then either give the manager a envelope for the servers to split, or tip them all individually.

This is what I’m tipping, if it’s helpful:  http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/our-tipping-spreadsheet-does-this-seem-reasonable

(BTW, yay you’re back CC!  I love your writing voice so much, I can’t wait to read more of your posts. 🙂

I just emailed our caterer with that question.  He did say back in the fall that the servers at events like these get paid much more than the servers we have in restaurants, so the 15-20% is generally excessive.
