If I remember correctly a short wick is key. When there is a lot of extra the soot you get is from the burning of the wick and not the wax. Also keep them out of big drafts. =)
Your wick needs to be no more than 1/4 inch long when you light the candle. Soot is inevitable if you burn the candle longer than 3-4 hours in a container without cutting the wick again. I'm a candle maker...I know.

hello --
we are planning on doing a centerpiece with lots (ok, 6ish) pillar candles in glass cylinder vases of different heights. we're pretty much all set to go but i just remembered how cylinder vases can get all soot-y and blackish at the top of the glass after awhile ... any tips on how to keep this from happening?
unfortch, we have to keep the candles in the vases ... those good 'ol venue rules. :)
