Any sort of carbs or sugar (even fruit!) could spike your glucose levels. I would stick with protiens only before your test - like eggs or meat, just to be safe!
they told me not to eat before my test. the only advice i can give is dont throw up. throwing up is instant 3 hour test!
I made my test first thing in the morning, so I didn't eat anything. I only did the test one time and it was negative so yeah :)
i've taken the 1hr test, twice (an early glucose test at 18 wks & then the normal one at 28wks). I went in the morning both times & skipped eating. I was fine afterwards and drove myself home. I would definitely take a snack with you to eat after the test.
@cr6zy: this must depend on you doctor's office. for mine, if you throw up, it just voids the test and you have to come back and try again.
Honestly if I could do it again I would skip eating and just go as early as possible. I stupidly had a bagel and then had to go back for the 3 hour, which luckily I passed.
If you've eaten ANYTHING... other than black coffee they cannot test you.
It has to be fasting.. unless your dr. has specified anything different and it has to be on the order and it's noted on the test results.
I've had to turn many a pregger momma's away b/c they ate. =/
From what we've done... throwing up just means re-testing another day.
@amnystik: Not necessarily. They (doctor and thetesting center) told me I could eat before my 1 hour as long as it wasnt heavy in carbs or sugar-so they sugested mostly proteins, minimal carbs, no fruit. And they asked me when I got there if Id eaten and I told them yes-eggs and some sausage, and it wasnt an issue. I think it depends on your doctor, so ask them.
Also-I passed even after eating, so really, it probably just depends on your levels. You cant really trick it into being lower, but you can get too high of a reading based on what youve eaten
@amnystik: For the 1 hour test I was told you should eat, that it shouldn't be fasting.
Where I went to the OB they do the 1 hour test twice in pregnancy, once at 16 weeks and once at like 28 weeks. I scheduled mine in the morning both times and had a small breakfast with water before hand (probably like an hour and a half before the test) and passed with plenty of room to spare both times.
I just took that last week. Mine was at like 1:30 in the afternoon. I had an egg with tabasco and pepper, but then my husband got a breakfast burrito, and I thought, "No fair! I'm hungry too!" So I ate a breakfast burrito. I passed after the 1-hour test.
And gosh did I want a chaser for that crap. If you drink normal (not diet) pop it should go down a little easier because it has got that syrupy feel to it like normal pop does - but that doesn't mean it is pleasant. I chose fruit punch. :)
@KellyV: @troubled: Then I'd imagine that where you test would be aware of that. We always tested fasting... unless it was specified on the order. =)
And you'd be surprised preggers and not how many people would come in having eaten something and we'd have to turn them away... ugh =/
Your not supposed to eat anything. At least thats what they told me.. So I would just stick to water and drink ALOT of it. Also before that try not to eat alot of breads, pasta, carbs like that and things with lots of sugar, even if it is "good" sugar like fruit. But I would be prepared after you drink that nasty stuff to wash it down with some water or something. Its awful Im not going to lie to you.. Good luck and dont fret you will pass. :)
OH.. and if you have a choice... the orange is the "better" one... the cola tastes terrible. lol
@amnystik: theres a cola one?! EW! Ive only heard of orange and fruit punch! I HAAAAATE flat soda, so Id imagine I wold despise the cola. I didnt mind the orange though, I thought it was kinda tasty lol
@KellyV: lol... yea we had the fruit punch in our lab... I did the orange one and thought it just tasted like extra sweet Sunkist. lol
And yes.... there is a cola one! <-- yucky!
Go for a walk before the test!! it will bring your initial levels down :)
My doctor didn't say I couldn't eat. She just said be aware, if I down a snickers bar that day, I'm probably going to fail. I suppose it would be a good idea to avoid/limit carbs, but no one said I couldn't eat.
They told me not to fast, mine is scheduled for July 14th and I'll be 27 weeks. On the instructions it says not to refrigerate or put ice in it, they gave it to me to bring home, I'm suppose to drink it 30 minutes before the appointment let them know what time I finished it and they'll draw my blood 1 hour after that.
I had a choice between orange and lime.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! My midwife just called to let me know I failed my hr test yesterday. I have scheduled the 3 hr for Monday, but will try to get it done tomorrow if I can get to the lab early enough. I am not looking forward to not being able to eat for so long....I like to eat right when I wake up in the morning.
By the way. I drank a lemon lime version on the drink. It was clear so I thought it would be easier for me to drink than the bright orange crap. It wasn't so bad...tasted like a flat Sprite...although it did get a thick feeling in my throat towards the end.
@MzMarzipan: OH NO!!!! Glad to hear they have a new flavor though =D.. Goodluck with your 3-hr... Whatever you do DON'T THROW UP... I always felt bad for the mommas that got sick. =(
Thanks for the food info you guys. I just had eggs for breakfast.
I was told NOT to fast. I have to do that for the 3-hour if I take that...but with the 1hour I am not to eat 1 hour before drinking the glu-cola.
Good luck! I'm interested to hear how it went for you. I have mine on Thursday.
Just thought I'd share that I just took my 1 hour, and they gave me Jelly Beans instead of the drink :) They were actually quite tasty! So if your offices gives you the option all you have to eat is 17 jelly beans.
@L2sweetpea: I want that!
My test is scheduled for 5:30pm on a Thursday... I eat fruit for breakfast every morning and I can longer handle the smell of eggs. I'm screwed.

Tomorrow I am taking my 1-hour glucose test.
I don't want to "trick" the test....but I don't want to eat things that will make my blood sugar go up and cause me to take the 3-hour test if I don't need to
I ofcourse will not eat candy tomorrow...but there is so much that can raise my blood sugar, like fruit.
I looked online and say that people were told to eat eggs for breakfast and to not only aviod sugar, but also carbs
Have you been given any tips? Just wonder what I should eat tomorrow so that I don't give myself a false positive.
