Tips on Tallis?

posted 3 months ago in Jewish

Anyone have any tips on which tallis to buy?  Does it matter what I choose?  Can I just choose anything I like?  Is something considered good or bad?

You have good timing because I was just online searching! I'm a little less than four weeks out from my wedding.

I have no clue what to get in terms of size or anything. As of now we plan on using FI's bar mitzvah tallis to cover the chuppah but that will take some wrangling as it is "boy-sized."

It got me thinking that maybe I should get this for him as part of his wedding gift, but I don't know if that's appropriate. His family isn't very religious, so no one else would purchase him one. He wouldn't wear it during the service, but we'd use it to initially cover the chuppah and then it would become his personal one.

So long story short, I'm interested in whatever answers you get...quickly!

Here is the only thing I DO know, my rabbi said it is traditional to buy this for him.  ALSO I attended the bar mitzvah of my rabbi's last (youngest) son and at that time he gave him "the tallis that mommy gave me on our wedding" so even if your future husband never wears it, it is a very nice heirloom for your kids.  Also you never know when/if he will become more observant--so many of my non kosher friends are going kosher in their old age-(tho I dont expect I will!)

It's traditional for the bride (or the bride's parents) to give the groom a new tallit for the wedding (like an engagement present).  If you want to use it as the chuppah itself, you probably do want it to be big.  Even if he doesn't wear it in shul, perhaps you want to pass it down like what your rabbi did.  I've seen people wrap babies in their wedding talit for their bris/baby naming too (along with a wimple I guess?).

Other than that, you can pretty much pick anything you like as long as it's a kosher talit. :)  Four corners, kosher tzitziot, etc...

OK -- I'm totally overwhelmed by all the sites. Anyone have any experience ordering from one of these places? I'm going to need to do this Sunday/Monday first thing.
