Do you mean they stick out above the top of your cup? That sounds like you need a larger cup.
I feel like more coverage is for busty girls. I am a little ole 34b. But now I am thinking I might need to try a 32C.
If you're nipples hang out, you need a bigger cup size. It has nothing to do with the shape of the cup.
@zippylef: I think so too. I think I need to try a 32C. I haven't heard many ladies say that is their cup size. I wonder if it is hard to find.
@ella86: I've seen it around. You could always go to Victoria's Secret and have them size you.
I would recommend that you go to a specialty store or high-end department store that will officially measure you and show you how a bra should fit you properly. Most women who have not been fitted professionally are wearing the wrong bra size.
Even if you're wearing a bra with demi-cups, your areola should not be visible above the cup line. And, if, instead, you are referring to protruding nipples, you can purchase various types of lingerie accessories that you can insert into the cup of a properly fitted bra to reduce this affect.
ETA: You easily can find beautiful bras up to a 38 DD cup. Victoria's Secret and major department stores have them. Those of us who require a larger cup size have a much more challenging time finding PRETTY bras that fit us. I have to travel hours to visit a specialty boutique or Nordstrom or order them online after I already know a particular style will fit.
@BayStateBride: I've never been sized. Sounds like I need to do this. What do they do?
@ella86: I worked for VS for 5 years, they make that size in quite a few bras. If your band in your existing bra fits, then don't go down a band size. If the cup is your only issue, then just go up to a 34C. Believe me, I was one for years and it's not as big as it sounds.
@zippylef: ok. the band fits. im just busting out the top. i really don't think i am a C though. i will have to go get measured.
I'd second (or third!) getting sized by someone at VS!! I am 30 years old, and I just (finally) went in to get sized about 2 weeks ago (and only because my DH got me a giftcard for Christmas). I had the same problem....and it made me really self-conscious when trying to wear most of my shirts (everytime I'd bend or move, I'd get what I affectionately refer to as "quads", where my boobs would spill out over the tops of the cups leaving weird double-cleavage...yuck!). I'd been wearing a 34 or 36 C, turns out I was needing a 32DD (yikes, talk about hard to find except specialty stores....:( ). I just kept buying bigger sizes around my ribcage, but needed a bigger cup size instead. It is so nice finally having under-roos that fit!!
Definitely sounds like your bra is the wrong size. I'd go to Nordstroms and get measured. They do a great job!
@ella86: Honestly, you'd be surprised. I thought I was a 34B forever and I was sized and made to try on all the bras as part of my orientation when I started working there. When the manager measured me a 34C, I about called her a liar to her face. I went in and tried everything one a lo and behold... I was a 34C.
As for how the measuring it done, it's really painless. You go in, they do it either in the fitting room area or in an actual fitting room depending on your preference, they take a measurement above your breasts and one across the fullest part and they tell you w size based on those measurements. There is some error in this process, so you will have to probably try on a couple sizes and let them help you find the right bras to fit you.
@ella86: I'm a 32C...I buy my bras at Victoria's Secret and H&M...I can never find anything anywhere else in my size. I also didn't really think I was a C cup (I used to wear 34B bras and they never really fit right, but my back is really tiny so the 32C is the best fit for me. I'm not what people traditionally think of when they hear c cup, but when you are more petite, your cup number goes up when your band number goes down (I think I said that right lol)
@kate169: hmm this sounds like me. I am pretty tiny all around and wouldn't ever think of myself as a C. I think Victorias Secret model when I think of C cup. But what you are saying makes sense. I am going to get measured for sure.
One thing I'd say with measuring is that it's only a guide, because different makes come up differently; I never go by size, I always go by fit; I can be a 36B, 34C, 36C, 34D or 34DD depending on the make and style.
A properly-fitting bra should:
Not dig in anywhere. You should not get any 'back fat' around the strap at the back, or under your arms, and the cups should fit smoothly ie you should not look like you have 4 breasts if you look from the side lol
Give you good coverage in the cup; they should cover your breast, including your nipples; if it doesn't cover your nipples, it's too small
Fit securely on the loosest back setting. This is because bras lose their elasticity with washing, so if it only fits snuggly on the tightest setting, chances are it will eventually give and be too loose
The straps should not dig in; they should be secure and comfortable, and not slip off, but should not leave marks or dig in
The cups should not gape; if they do, it's too big; they should sit flush to your skin.
If you get measured, they should also teach you how to know if a bra fits properly, and IMO this is much more useful than being measured.
It sounds like you need a more full coverage bra, versus a demi bra. Also the cup of a 34B and a 32C is almost exactly the same, its just the band size that is different (little known secret of a former VS employee, its called a "sister size")
@barbie86: Thanks for the tips. They are really helpful :) Especially the part about it fitting on the loosest setting!
Have you tried gettig sized? You'd know fo rsure what bra size you need then.
I'm a petite and wore 34B for YEARS--I was sure that was my size! Like you, I thought, C-cup? That's for girls with larger chests. Then on a whim I got measured at VS and lo and behold...I'm a 34C. I was very surprised, but I tried on bras in that size and I have never looked back, haha. I think getting measured is a great idea--you might just be a small C like me and you will feel so much better in the right bra :-)
@ella86: Glad you got it figured out, you will be much more comfortable now!

If my nipples (lol, I am so immature, that word makes me laugh) stick out of my bra slightly, does that mean I need a different cup size? I mean my boobies are not gross or anything, in fact I am quite proud of them. So I don't know if its this type of bra I have been wearing (for plunging necklines) or if it just the wrong cup size. I feel dumb for writing this.
