My sister had it. How it started out, her jaw was really sore, and it got to where she couldn't open her mouth all the way, then progressively worse to where she could hardly speak.
I have TMJ. I became aware of it when I went to college and was having a lot of jaw pain. Occasionally my jaw will lock, I describe it like having exercise bands on my jaw and when it's sore or locks it's like a really thick band is placed on it. When my jaw locks I can't really talk, I can't open my mouth wide enough to eat a slice of pizza. Thankfully that hasn't happened in a while, but that's probably because I'm careful to not do the things that agrivate my condition. Usually if my jaw is bad it's just moderate jaw pain. I sleep with a night guard at night, I clench my jaw when I sleep, so that helps me a lot. But caffeine, stress, and excessive chewing sets my jaw off. So I try not to have caffiene, I stay away from bagels and really thick pizza, and never lean my head (jaw!) on my hands.
I think so. :-(
I thought it was getting better, but then yesterday it got totally stuck open (cuz I was getting more relaxed about not being so careful with it,) and it was stuck for longer than it's ever been, so I kind of forced it in place (yeow!) and now it's back to where it was. :-(
I've decided until the wedding at least I will simply NOT let it get stuck, and hope it keeps getting better.... (and not let myself be stressed, especially before bed.)
@joy2011: It's not always something you can will in to happening or not happening. I'd suggest trying to be as relaxed as possible, try not to stress out unless you have to. And also avoid opening your jaw real wide, that'll help. I know my night guard helps me a LOT. I had mine made by my dentist but you can buy a kit at the store (CVS, etc) and make one yourself. That may be a good temporary help until the wedding!
I do :o( It started right around wedding planning. I had severe jaw pain in the mornings, and my dentist noticed that my teeth showed signs of grinding/clenching. I tried the over the counter night guards, but they were too big for my mouth and were causing more of an issue. So, I sucked it up and bought a custom one from my dentist for $450.
I bit through my first night guard in a year. I'm onto my second now, but it helps tremendously. TMJ is really caused from stress, so the more stressed you are, the more you'll grind your teeth and knock your jaw out of whack. It had gotten better until we started TTC...the stress from that has definitely made it worse. I sympathize with you though!
Me! Sore jaw from clenching and grinding my teeth. I haven't gotten a mouth guard, but know that I should.
@2PeasinaPod: How long did it take you to get used to the mouth guard while sleeping?
@2PeasinaPod: I ground through mine within the first year too! My dentist patched that part up and somehow it's held ever since.
I've had my night guard for 7 years now. And my dentist told me if taken good care of it can last for 12-15 possibly! For me it's been a really great investment!
@2PeasinaPod: yeah, I bought a store-one, and while I cut it down, it seemed a bit big, so I wore it for a few nights, but during the night my jaw would get stuck once or twice--that can't be good! So I'm just going to wait til after the wedding to go see the dentist if it's not better... :-/
@mblab: oh yeah, that's kind of what I meant. I just will NOT open my mouth wide, even if it means I have to cut up my sandwich! :-)
@joy2011: I was afraid you thought you could just will it from happening. I so wish I could, that'd be amazing! But yeah, stay away from opening your jaw wide before the wedding and that should make a big difference. Good luck and just make sure to see your dentist about it after the wedding.
I do, though it's never gotten stuck in place. I found out about it years ago when I went to the doctor because I thought my ears were really clogged. Turns out they weren't clogged, but feeling like they were was one of the TMJ symptons. I can't chew gum and my throat can hurt, my ears feel stuffed, and my jaw gets sore if I try to eat anything that requires a lot of chewing. I also have trouble opening my jaw far. Ugh, dentist tomorrow. Sometimes if I do, it feels like it's popped or stuck, but after a moment I can close it again fine. It's more a weird/uncomfortable feeling than pain.
I have a mouthguard, which helps. I am a champion teeth grinder when I sleep - you can hear it from the next room.
I have TMJ. I clench my teeth constantly, even when awake. My jaw and mouth gets swollen and sore. My actual cheeks get tender on the outside, it's strange. Also, the swelling sometimes gets severe enough to block the air flow to my eustachian tubes, causing an under-water feeling in my ears and a lot of ear pain.
I don't think I am clenching when I am sleeping, I know I used to and I would have dreams that I needed to talk or scream but nothing came out, and I would wake up to a clenched jaw. Its really weird, I have pain in both jaws, mostly where they meet, and I'm also getting migraines because of it. And my whole face feels like its really tight, my cheeks hurt, ugh! I just wonder if its worth going to the doc for, or just wait til I have my dentist appt in 2 weeks. I really can't afford a custom bite guard right now...
I do. SUCKINESS!
It started after I had dental work done to fix my overbite. I remember several times when my jaw got stuck either closed or open (I don't remember which) and it's such a scary feeling.
After a looooong time I finally got to this dentist who made me a (RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE) mouthguard that works wonders. Sometimes I still wear it down by grinding my teeth at night when I'm wearing it, so I have to go to get it adjusted.
@MrsSl82be: I would just wait to go to the dentist. The dr. hasn't done anything for me.
Another thing that helped me was (for lack of a better term, cuz I'm not sure what it's actually called) was electric shock. The dentist would put these wires on my face and then small shocks every couple seconds for half an hour (you determine the intensity of the shocks and they don't hurt). It really loosened everything up, but the relief didn't last.
