I have wanted to write this post about the story of my ring for awhile! I know many of you are in the same boat as my FI and I 🙂
Being recent college graduates, we were broke and just starting our careers. We had wanted to make sure we waited until we were done with school to get officially engaged.
We started our journey of looking for a ring this past summer. We knew that we wouldn’t be able to just walk into any old jewelery store and buy something because of our budget, so I decided to get creative. After exploring and researching like crazy, we looked into some heirloom rings, online stores, ebay, craigslist, EVERYTHING…..then I decided to research my last option…..a pawn shop….
First, before you ever even think about setting foot in one, you need to explore your own feelings on a “used” ring. Do you believe in karma? Scared about where the ring came from? Is it going to be real? Am I ok with this symbol of everlasting love that has probably been given to someone else? If you are not ok with any aspect, then this option isn’t for you, and that is totally ok!!!
I was ok with the fact that I would be getting a used ring. I like to think that it was either somebody’s first ring and they were just needing an upgrade, or that I’m giving this ring a second chance to be the symbol of “forever”. In other words…it did and does not bother me 🙂
So anyway, I walked into three different pawn shops. Some were definitely a little sketchy/scary and one of them had a tiny selection. You will see a lot of older styles which is fun if that’s what you’re into! The last and best one I walked into had a HUGE selection of rings and great customer service! I did not feel weird about it at all. Also, this particular shop has a diamond guarantee. No, you probably won’t get any certifications with a pawn shop ring, so if you are insistant on that, this is also not for you!
I decided to bring then SO to the shop the next day to look around. I tried on a few and then I tried on a “three stone” ring which is a ring style I didn’t think I liked! Well this particular ring was beautiful! Had awesome milgrain scrolling on the side, tons of sparkle and split shank…and the most important part, the price was right!!! I probably only had the ring on for a minute and I knew!
We didn’t buy it that day but I kept thinking about that ring! I did some sneaky searching and found that the ring was originally from Jared’s and they still sell it! The price difference was ridiculous.
I finally just told SO to go and buy it! I loved it, he loved it, I didn’t care that it wasn’t a “surprise” and it was sooo affordable! I dropped the subject after that, but as you know I did end up with that ring haha
So bees…for any of you that need a more budget friendly option, I am going to suggest you look at your local pawn shops 🙂 Just ask the right questions, and make sure they have some kind of guarantee or return policy. You can also get jewelry insurance through an independent company so you don’t have to worry about that either!
So here are the pics!
1/2 carat center, about 1.3 total carats, 14k white gold
Appraised for: $3700
Buy at Jared’s new for: $2600
PAWN SHOP PRICE: $900!!!!!!!!!!
As you can see…an amazing deal 🙂 The ring was like brand new with no scratches or anything! All the stones were there, no problems what so ever! It’s been two months and I still love it as much as day one!
I hope this post gives some of you waiting bees the confidence to check out this option and to not be scared! There are some great deals to be snagged! It is not for everyone, but it could be for you 🙂
