So ive been sick for 3 weeks now.. virus.. pnuemonia... gastritis... bad!! havent been able to do anything more than an hour or so at a time... and have been off work for 2 weeks now.. .I just started to feel better last night and I actually didnt throw up for the first time yesterday!! but Im suppose to work tonight.. and im not talking 8 hours at a desk.. Im talking 13 hours as an ICU nurse...  Just debating if I should go back yet or not.. I hate leaving my floor short, but Im terrified to go back and get sick and be stuck there for the rest of the night...to go or not to go?

In my experience, most ICU's won't let sick or potentially contagious nurses/care givers/docs around their patients since they're at higher risk - so you might just want to see what the shift supervisor thinks?

    -Feel better!

@SouthernTulip: If that were only the case... they dont care if youre sick or broken or anything... a nurse is a nurse is a nurse... especially an ICU trained nurse... our positions are not filled by just anyone... I dont have to ask.. I know they dont care if Im sick or not... I was throwing up at work one day and had a virus... my manager wouldnt even let me go home

Edit; Just saw your last post.  The joys of working in the health care field...  That's an awful position to be in.  Personally, I stay home when I'm sick to I don't get others and patients ill.  That can be hard to do depending on the policy of the hospital though.  I hope you feel better soon!

I would say rest, make sure you are at least 99% better and then go back! They will be able to deal without you - they have for 2 weeks!!!

I say stay home. See how you feel tomorrow or the day after that. That's a grueling shift to work, especially after being sick for so long. Feel better!
