So I’ve asked this question before but I still don’t know what to do. We are getting married in my hometown and will be flying there a month before the wedding to get our marriage license and for a shower and then will be flying in for the wedding.
I should mention I have purchased a rather large ball gown and it will not fit as a carry on. My fiance would like to put it in a large suitcase or box and check it when we travel back a month before the wedding.
I’m thinking ship it UPS or FedEX with insurance and tracking. We both think our option is the least likely to get lost. I think either way I’m going to be a nervous wreck but I want to limit the risk of something happening.

Check out this website:
They tell you how to ship as well as offer other suggestions.
I purchased my wedding gown online and it was shipped via UPS. It was packed very well w/ tissue paper and in a garment bag. Now just need to get it steamed.
Hope this helps.

I bought my dress in the US and had to bring it back to the UK. So I just checked it in with my luggage. No insurance, no tracking, nothing. The chances of anything happening to it were so minuscule, that I just didn’t bother with alternatives.

I also had a large ballgown. If folded, it would have fit in the overhead bin. The flight attendants let me pre-board so they could put it in the closet. Worst case scenario, it gets gate-checked but at least it’s not going through regular checked baggage.
It did get pretty wrinkled, but I had planned on having it steamed when I got there anyway, so I wasn’t worried about that.
I just wouldn’t take the chance of shipping it. Do NOT just check it–then you have absolutely no recourse if it’s lost or damaged.
