Soooo - I know its traditional to have the best man do a toast.  In Wedding Crashers, the bride's sister also did one, so FI was wondering if my sister should as well (she is essentially the MOH, and loves to talk, so I'm sure she would be thrilled).  His best friend since grade school I think would also love to do one - maybe even more than his brother (the best man) as his brother is a little shy.

My question is - how many toasts should we have?  How many is too many?  If there is more than one, should they all come together?  Or should we spread them through the evening somehow?

Hmm...it depends on your plan for the evening, I guess. I went to one wedding that had about 45 minutes worth of toasts, but that was during a seated dinner. I went to another that only had about 3 minutes worth, but that dinner was a free-for-all buffet in the midst of dancing.

I'd say the 45 minutes was pretty excessive to sit through, but that reception was also really lengthy.

typically both sides say a speech. it wouldn't be fair for only the groom to have some great things said about him! you can have them set up however you like. the last wedding i went to had the moh and the best man speak and then the dj opened it up to everyone else [the bride and groom didn't know that was going to happen but loved it] - of course this was before the alcohol was free flowing so that was probably key. there were probably only three more toasts after that so it didn't take too long. then again it was also a smaller wedding.

another one i went to did the same thing but it took forever because there were over 300 people there and folks kept popping up just when you thought it was over. just a heads up.

yeah - if you only want two toasts at the reception, you definitely need to make sure the microphone is put firmly back in the DJ's/emcee's control once they're finished. having a bunch of random people talk on and on is one of my personal wedding nightmares, so much so that i'm thinking of limiting all of our toasts to the rehearsal dinner.

Our Best Man and MOH are each giving a toast.  I am also going to have my stepdad say a little something and the grooms dad.

My FI is canadian and they are used to giving these long speaches where like everyone speaks.

I would definetly have your sister give a toast.

too funny, May - the 45-minutes-of-toasts wedding was a Canadian one - Newfie, at that! ; )

That is too funny! Canadian weddings are real interesting! Also they go on till like 3 in the morning. My FI could not believe it when I told him our reception was over at 11. So I imagine our after party will go on for ever. I'll probably end up going to bed alone that night.

Probably so!! There was no official after party for this one, but the reception didn't wrap up til 12:30 and I know people continued to drink in the hotel afterwards. Everybody had a blast! The groom's family was from Milwaukee, so there was no shortage of partying...

Sorry Suzanno - didn't mean to hijack your thread. :)

No problem - I have some friends coming from Wisconsin, so maybe I should be worried about them?  I know they are always the absolute last to leave any party - and then never really leave, just adjourn to another location.
