- Wedding: March 2013
It was one of his surprises during the day.. Letting everyone know of our story.
It was a fine day, I didn‟t expect anything special and didn‟t realised it was Valentine‟s Day as I just want to get out of the house and hang out with my friends because it has been a while that we have seen each other, not since graduation. Year is 2009, I was really bored by the bus trip from Cavite going to Makati, and somehow it was bizarre, I felt that something was about to happen that is beyond my understanding. My friends decided to have a drink after hanging out in the mall. It was getting a bit late, bars and pubs are still open though. I have met some new found friends as well, and they were the ones who decided to have a drink in their place. It was that night that I met and was finally introduced to Rlyn (I do see her several times in university where we both got our degree in Nursing). I was really chuffed and sad at the same time. She was leaving in a week‟s time to study in the UK. Talk about great timing. To cut the story short (for that night only). We endlessly talked. I was in awe with her. I found her eloquently interesting and we chatted for hours.
I wanted to get to know her and see her more, so when she was more sober, I asked her out. To which she declined! I thought we had an „understanding‟. She said there‟s no point as she‟s already leaving. Even our friends were saying „Ano yan? Isang linggong pag-ibig?‟ (What‟s that? A one week affair?). I wanted that chance, instead she gave me a challenge. She said „Punta ka muna ng UK‟ (go to the UK first). I took her phone from her hand and saved my number. I asked her to call/text me. That was our first meeting.
A week has passed. Rlyn did text me so I was happy, but the day of her flight has come and I felt like the chance that I wanted is really slipping away, so I decided to make the most of it, thinking if it was the last time we will ever see each other again might as well have one hell of a good memory rather than just messages. So I went to try to see her before she boards her flight. I was with Raynelle when I was rushing to NAIA 1, hoping to still see her. You know those movie scenes where either the guy/girl looks like they were too late? I felt that way. Just as I was ready to accept defeat, there she was. And just like in the movies, we kissed. To hell with public displays of affection!
I didn‟t care, and I think she did not care either. I didn‟t even realised that Rlyn was with a friend (Sarah), who looked shocked as she has never seen me before. Moreover, I even forgot where my good friend Raynelle was, he was probably trailing behind me when this happened and was probably smoking a cigarette. Rlyn still left after this, this was our second meeting.
Even after she left, I still wanted that chance. So 3 days after her flight, I went to apply for a UK visa. I told her this and all she said was „saka na natin pag- usapan kung na-approve‟ (we‟ll talk about it when it gets approved). Come on, We have been constantly in contact since. She has been a special person to me, not only that she is gorgeous, she is also smart and kind. We have a lot in common. We went to the same university; we talked about just everything. And as time went, I felt that feelings we‟re getting more and more mutual to each other.
However, months have passed and I haven‟t heard from the embassy. It has been a tough time for me and my family because my mother has been ill and was taken to hospital. As time went, the good Lord took her away from us. I thought that was the sign that I will never see the other woman I came to know and like. However, it‟s also my goal to repatriate my mother‟s body (as she was in KSA). I pursued to go abroad to achieve not just this goal but it‟s also a chance for me to meet Rlyn in the UK.
After 7 months, I travelled 20,000 miles away from home, with only £50 in my pocket, I have arrived in Heathrow on the 9th of October 2009, around half past one in the afternoon, it was autumn so just imagine how it was like for me living my entire life in the tropics and wondering around the cold part of the world wearing a bloody hoodie. I was thinking “What the hell am I gonna do now?”
I don‟t know where to go and what to do and I was on my own. The fact that I haven‟t been in any other country, I didn‟t know where to begin so I used my instincts and followed the signs and ask for directions, bearing in mind that I am just hours away to wherever Rlyn is. I have actually borrowed mobiles from strangers to make phone calls.
The destination was Derby, and I initially don‟t know where the heck that was. I was hungry and tired, carrying a heavy shitload of luggage. But when I did arrive in Derby, all the struggles I was having within myself was thrown out of the window. Mind you it was 01:00 AM, but I got to see Rlyn and it made the journey all worth it. We couldn‟t help crying upon hugging each other. She, from being surprised and oblivious to my plans; I cried because I finally saw her again. She was such a sight. That was our third meeting.
It was like walking a new path in my life, wherein I have taken Rlyn‟s hand with me. It has been one of the best days of my life.
We have helped each other and I eventually conquered her heart.
On the 14th of February 2012 in England, I married the woman I met on the same date 3 years ago. My dearest Rlyn, known as Lovely to her family and Lyn to her friends became my wife. And I hope that no matter what obstacle faces us, this story will remind us of how much we are willing to give to be with each other.
Today, 16th of March 2013, is a celebration of our decision to wed again, this time in the presence of God and all our families and friends.
