I know that this is super early to be thinking about, but our 1 year anniversary is coming in August. We were cleaning a dresser the other day and found that we had some cash left from the honeymoon/wedding that we had completely forgotten about! So, we started talking about what to do with it (neither of us wanted to us it for groceries!) and DH suggested using it towards a trip for our 1 year.
He really wants to get a nice hotel room (actually, he’s thinking more of a suite) that is on an upper floor because our room the night of our wedding wasn’t nearly as great as it was supposed to be. I didn’t mind too much, but it still bugs him how disappointing it was. (Ground level, the sink wasn’t in the bathroom, the Jacuzzi was REALLY small, etc). So, he wants to splurge and do it up for our 1 year. We were trying to think of where to go and remembered that on our honeymoon, we had wanted to go to a zoo, but ran out of time. We’re looking at either Toledo or Cinncinnati cause we’ve heard good things about both zoos, they’re still within driving distance of MI and it seems like they’re big enough to have nicer hotels.
Have any of you bees been to either zoo or a nice hotel in either city? Are there other things we should look at doing while we’re there? We’ll need to set up vacation time at work soon and want to get an idea of how much time we’re going to take. ANY suggestions you have would be great!

belamere suites, close to toledo is the perfect couples get a way! there are jacuzzis in the room and you have your own private entrance from the outside, we were thinking about going there for our dating anniversary (were not married yet) and its not much more expensive than a regular hotel

I’ve only been to Cincinnati a few times, and one of my favorite experiences has been visiting the Cincinnati zoo!

@lybarra: So it’s worth going? We’ve been trying to decide between that one and Toledo. The place we’re probably going to get (thanks mrsztobe!) is closer to Toledo, but I’ve heard more about Cinncinatti?

Not to further complicate things, but the Columbus Zoo is the best in the country, way better than Cincy or Toledo! I stayed at The Lofts in Cbus once. Our normal hotel room was SO COOL! I loved it. Even that room would feel like something special so I imagine their suites and such would be phenomenal.

@unimeg07: I was about to chime in and say this! One long weekend when my now-husband and I wanted to get out of town, we went to Columbus and stayed in the Cambria Suites near Polaris. There’s a jacuzzi suite that has a living area, bedroom area, and separate room in the suite with a flat screen TV and HUGE jacuzzi.
We went to the Columbus zoo that same weekend, to the Irish pub, to BJs for a beer tasting, shopping (including to Lush for jacuzzi bath bombs), had room service delivered to us so we could enjoy the jacuzzi, and had a lot of fun for only going 1.5 hours away from us.

im from the ‘nasty nati’ so id say the netherlands hotel is amazing.. and different things inside to do. like bar, formal dinner, jazz band. and fountain square is across street.. and so is tiffanys!

The Cincinnati Zoo is amazing and you could get a gorgeous hotel room downtown on the river! 🙂

Cincinnati! Straight to Cincinnati. I live up by Toledo now, and my family lives down by Cincinnati, so I’ve spent a decent amount of time in both places. Toledo has some nice spots, but is declining it seems. Cincinnati has so much opportunity for fun and culture! The Newport Aquarium is amazing, for instance. Plus, if you wanted to, you could day trip to Dayton and have 2 cities for the price of one!
