Awww, hopefully Molly lasts beyond the 14 years. I understand your feelings, my dog is like a child to me. Anyway, I sometimes get my dog some doggie ice cream for special treats (frosty paws, at most grocery stores). Hope Molly has a wonderfulbirthday!
we celebrate our dog's birthday too .. he is a member of the family and we would celebrate any other member's birthday
i think getting her some treats and maybe a few new toys would be wonderful :) just spending time with her will make her extremely happy
i hope you all enjoy her birthday and get to see many more
thanks both of you :) i will try to find some stuff either this afternoon or tomorrow morning :)
Oh, try not to think about the end of her life, just enjoy her life right now. I know it is tough though... one of the hardest things about life, but also what makes dogs so special. They should live as long as we do...
I celebrate pet birthdays too! And I understand about worrying about your pets; my first cat died when she was about 8 years old. My two cats are going to be turning 9 and I keep freaking out, but they're both healthy as horses.
I give my pets people food on their birthdays. I know it's not good for them, but they enjoy it and it's just a special occasion thing (I'll give them a bit of Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, too).
Happy birthday to Molly, and many more!
I know how you feel....my FI and I have 2 Labrador Retriever's and they are like our children. Just try to make the best of her day tomorrow. Dogs are so self-less and provide unconditional love. I saw a quote the other day that was so inspiring, "Be the person that your dog thinks you are." They love us no matter what...fat, thin, smart, dumb, smelly, clean...you get the idea. The perfect day for your dog would be to just have 24/7 affection....belly rubs, treats, and just to thank her for all the joy and happiness she has brought to you. I know it is hard not to focus on how much time they have left with us but try to let that go and just enjoy everyday one day at a time. Treat everyday like it is her birthday!
thanks everyone, i have work in the afternoon but definitely in the morning and when i get back from work i will treat her like the queen she is :) i am thinking maybe take her for a walk in the morning too :) i rarely do unfortunately
Do you have a dog bakery nearby? I always order a cake for my dogs on their birthdays.
I hear ya' on the age thing. Pepper (mini schnauzer) just turned 12, and DH raised her from a puppy. Matty (cockapoo) will turn 9 less than a week after I turn 30. DH and I both got our older dogs when we were around 21 years old, and soon we'll both be in our early 30s. We've changed so much in that time that we both feel like we "grew up" with those dogs.
We also have two other dogs who are both 7 years old. In addition to each of us having 1 dog, DH and I both got puppies before we became a couple. Our love kind of budded from a friendship that started with us spending hours online talking about our dogs and the progress the puppies were making.
Aw, happy birthday to your doggie!
FWIW, we got a dachshund when I was 14. I'm about to turn 31 next month... and the dog is still living the good live with my parents! She'll be 17 on her next birthday in May. It always sucks with beloved pets move on, but don't dwell on it! Celebrate the fact that you still have your doggie and that it's living an amazing life with you!
I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel too! They're really great dogs. Wish her happy birthday for me :) I think she will be happy just having you around to snuggle with.
My little girl's 10th birthday is Monday! It scares me to because she's my everything and no pet I've had has lived past 10. But she has no much energy and acts like a puppy, so I'm looking towards the positive. Otherwise, I start to cry. Just today we went hiking for 2 hours and she made out with every man she met and was still ready to go longer when we were done!
Btw, we're taking her shopping. She gets a new dress every birthday. :)
@ananeele: wow our dogs share a birthday :) (i'm in Aus, so currently it's Sunday afternoon)
the nearest dog bakery is about an hour and a half drive, and I can't drive so I don't think I will be able to do that, but I will go to pet stores and see if they have anything :)
thanks everyone for the birthday wishes
here is the birthday girl (photo taken about five years ago, she has lots more white now -especially around the eyes)

I second the Frosty Paws! Or peanutbutter in a Kong. My dogs also LOVE these bacon and cheese biscuits that come in a purple bag. I think they are called "Old Mother Hubbard" or something?
We had three dogs until September when one passed away at age 13. Now the others are 6 and 7, but I still keep thinking about how much I want them to stay young. All we can do is treat them like gold while we have them. :)

Hi everyone,
The title may be a bit confusing, so let me explain. We got our first dog Sally, in the beginning of 1997, she was born in October 1996, and got another dog, Molly in 2003. Sally passed away at the beginning of 2006, at aged 9. Then we bought Lady, our youngest, in 2007. Molly's 9th birthday is tomorrow, and I want to make it special. While Sally was sick a little bit, I was not prepared for her to die so young, and I worry that this may be Molly's last birthday. All of our dogs have been/are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. The lifespan is 9-14, but I am just scared this could be Molly's last birthday :'( any advice on how to make it special for her? I think I will buy a few treats for her, my FI has said he wants to get her something too, I just don't know what else I can do? It may seem silly to some people to celebrate a dog's birthday, but for me, my dogs are family.
