I was the admin assistant for the internet dept of a car dealership. The goal is for our dept to get swinging with ebay and social media and then I was going to manage that. That’s set for 2 more weeks. Until then, my boss offered to put me in rotation for internet appointment setting so that I have a better understanding of what my coworkers do, to up my experience, and to get me more familiar with the dealership in general, and to get me some extra money through commission. I agreed because I figured it couldn’t hurt.
I really, REALLY hate appointment setting. It’s not so much having to call people all day (yet), as it is the schedule. I’m basically on call myself because when people submit internet requests, they have to be responded to in a timely fashion or it hurts the reviews for our dept. So as per our new schedule setup I’m on late shift (11-7) this week – but being on late shift means I and my team mate are responsible for taking all the new leads from 7 pm – midnight aka when I’m home. Any leads we don’t pick up are open for the early shift (7:30-3:30), who take the leads from midnight to 7:30 am. Granted I don’t HAVE to take after hours leads but that means that I’m creating that much more work for the early shifters, not to mention, it makes me look lazy. And as it stands, the girls I work with were already putting in well over 40 hours from 7:30 am to 6 pm or later, so I have no idea how this 7:30-3:30/11-7 schedule will work out.
And instead of getting 2 consecutive days off, I get Sunday and Thursday off. However, if new leads are pouring in, sometimes my boss will call appointment setters and ask them to take care of leads. On their days off.
And then today, because I’m new, one of my coworkers assigned me a lot of her leads to lighten her load and give me something to do, which I was fine with at first. Then I realized she sent me a bunch of leads that were over 10 days old – which means the customers should technically be considered lost causes with no further contact. But then she only called them once so they’re still “new” in that sense, because nobody really contacted them. Which means if I have to treat them like new leads, they pile on top of actual new leads, which means my workload will soon balloon out of control and become overwhelming.
I don’t regret signing up for the experience but I really hope this truly is a gig that only lasts 2 weeks for me…I will be so pissed if plans get delayed and i have to keep doing this. I don’t mind working long hours, but I want to be able to manage my load and I want to be left alone once I leave the office. I do not want to have to answer to my boss in the middle of a day out with my husband because so-and-so thinks they may be interested in a Chevy Cobalt or whatever and so I have to go to home and send them an email.
