10. Mia

1. Jacob

We were a little bummed when we saw the list, there were two girls names on the top 5 that were in the running but we decided we didn't want to say her name and have 10 little girls respond when we were out and about.
Ive always loved names too! My husbands name is on the top 10 list (Noah) but he is the only Noah of his age that I know!
@troubled: I understand. There are some really good names on this list. To find our names, I dug really deep in things that we love. Granted, our girl name popped out at us as we were watching a movie, but our boy name I actually found through playing on Wikipedia using a thing we both love. (Okay, we love watching the Tour de France, so I was playing around in Tour stuff to find a boy name). Maybe you can do the same with something you and your husband love.
@PitBulLover: I love the name Noah and have been really upset that it's gotten so popular.
I'm not suprised about Jayden, I literally know 6 people who named their song Jayden within the last year!! I'm surprised about Mia though...
Wow, really? Some of those names seem to come out of left field. Hm. Well, neither of the names we're set on are on the lists so I guess that's good :)
@TheFutureMcBride: We found a name now, it just took us a bit - well unless she comes out and doesn't look like the name. We (though especiallly my husband) also watch a lot of cycling, he's a bit obsessed at the moment.
Our girls name is on that list, which did bum us out a little, but oh well. I like all the names on there though =o)
I like the names Liam and Isla. Thank God they're not on that list but probably will be when we start TTC b/c I keep hearing baby Liams.
If I see another Isabella......................damn Twilight.
Im surprised Edward isn't on the boy list.
I"m sad Olivia is on there...I was waiting to use that. LOL!
Edit: I'm not preggers or plan to be for another year or two.
I wouldn't doubt that Madison is the #1 girls name in my area. It is crazy how many times I have heard it in the past 2 years on new baby girls. Also, Emma is terribly popular around here, as well. Haven't heard any Olivias or Chloe's, though.
And Jayden, Kayden, Hayden are everywhere. Jackson is also super common where I live. But I'm also surprised at a few on the boys list. Ethan's really #2?
I LOVE names too and have had a "baby name list" for years and enjoy adding to it. One of my favorite baby name sites is called the Name Wizard!
Personally, I do not want to name my future child a popular name...really anything in the top 50-100...especially top 10!
I just think common names are a tad boring...my mom tried to name my sister and I unique names for our time so it's ingrained in me to do the same. I love my name but I knew a few others with it as well. My sister's name is very unique and from a namesake friend of my moms. It is Timaree...if you check out a name mapper it's only been really used in Nebraska and Rhode Island of all places!
Personally, I do not want to name my future child a popular name...really anything in the top 50-100...especially top 10!
I agree! My fiance's name is "Chris". We both worked at the same place during college, a tech-support call center, and within 20 feet of me, there were 5 people named "Chris".
I remember the "Jessicas" when I was in grade school; my class of 40 had 5 "Jessicas". We moved and I went to an even smaller school, out of 7 girls in my class there were 2 "Jessicas".
My name is "Abby", my sister's name is "Raina", I was always jealous of her when we were kids for having the "cool name".
I'm a bit sad about some of the names on there. I LOVE the name "Emma", but sadly it's off my list because of it's popularity. (Julianna and Fiona are currently at the top of my "girl list". As for the "boy list", fiance and I can't agree on anything! The only boy's name we've came close to both liking is "Brad".)
@KellyV: I saw that, but I say it doesn't count and my ruling is more important than the SSA.
@Mrs.LilyLunaLove: Name Wizard is awesome!
In case anyone is a name dork like me, here's the SSA website for top baby names: http://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/
You can go plug in the name you are thinking and see how popular it has been in the last 10 years. I think you even do popular names by state! We've chosen a name already, but I was surprised to see a couple of the names on our list have huge spikes up this year!
@TheFutureMcBride: Im with you. Your opinion takes prority over SSA any day
It really hasn't changed that drastically over the last few years. It's when you get into the top 100 that I get nervous. I loved Olivia back in like 2001 and then it exploded in popularity. Like a lot of you, my name is so painfully popular that I will NOT give my child a name if I feel it is too overused. Some of my very favorites have broken into the top 100 and they didn't used to be so it makes me nervous, especially since I have a few years to go yet. We'll see what happens. FI and I have slightly different name tastes, and his trends towards the more popular, so who knows!
I"m surprised Jack isn't on there!! I always wanted to name my future daughter Sophie, but it suddenly exploded with popularity so now that's scratched. I also really like the name Claire, but 2 of my new-mom friends just used it :)
If you love a name, go for it! Even if it is a popular name. When I was born, my name, "Sandra" was a top baby name (we are talking, back in the dark ages aka the '60's) But I only came across one other Sandra when I was in school.
Surprisingly, the list for Missouri is quite a bit different than the one for the US. There are some that are the same, but some that are definitely different.
1. Jacob and Emma
2. Ethan and Olivia
3. William and Isabella
4. Jackson and Ava
5. Logan and Madison
6. Aiden and Sophia
7. Noah and Abigail
8. Michael and Chloe
9. Landon and Addison
10. Gavin and Elizabeth
I refuse to name my children anything in the top 100. I have a very common name, it was number 14 the year I was born, and I always hated it.
My names for future babies are not popular at all. They will all have family-related "normal" middle names if they decide they can't handle the crazy ones we give them.
Boys:
Artemis Patrick (Artmemis is an assassin/hero from FH's favorite books, first born boys in my family all have the middle name Patrick)
Titus James (FH's middle name and my dads first name for the middle name)
Osiris Thomas (both of our dads' middle name for the middle)
Girls:
Virginia Rose (Nia for short, the first name is my grandmothers name, the middle is my sister's middle name)
Lillia Alexis (His grandmothers first name and his sisters middle name)
Edit: dad's =/= dads' We do not have the same dad lol!
@Caizn: Our first names for Wombat are different, but we're doing what you're doing: normal middle names in case they hate their name.
It drives me crazy that some of my favorite names (like Jackson, which flows so well with our last name) are moving up. I'm a Sarah born in the 80s, and in my group of friends alone there were 3 of us, so I instinctively want to shy away from using a popular name...but then, we also like very traditional names, and those seem to have staying power on those lists, so we're trying to look for names that are traditional, but not *too* popular..I think we'll be happy with a name outside of the top 20.
woohoo! the boys names (first and middle) that we JUST decided on this weekend are not on the list. We wanted to find something unique yet familar...if that makes sense lol.
my husband's name is #1! he happens to go by his middle name though.
As far as popular names go- I am guilty. I named my daughter Olivia in 2003. However, eventhough it has been around #3 for most of the past decade, my daughter has never had another one in any of her classes or had a friend by that name. Maybe we are just lucky.
i really like a lot of those names! i think a lot of those names are classic and will always be popular.
also, has anyone read The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell? His theory on baby names was that the "trendy" names first start out as unique amongst the white/upper class and then the popularity spikes as the name work its way through the middle class masses. Like, the name Madison was only popular amongst white/upper class in the early 90s but now 15/20 years later, that name has fallen off the radar amongst the upper class, but has now become popular across the middle income brackets.
i think if you really wanted to give your kid a unique name nowadays, you could always go with a name like "Heather" or "Jennifer"--probably safe bet that those aren't that popular these days
I love the SSA list. We are still trying to decided on a boys name but really don't want anything too popular. For a girl, I'm really pushing for Davie Jane.
@absolutbettie: My husband was telling me about that. Too bad he lost the book or I could read it for myself.
My baby girl's name is Olivia but I had never met an Olivia or seen any other babies with that name! Right after I had her, I saw her name on the top list! CRAZY!
I feel like Jacob is always one these lists, but Ive only known one Jacob my whole life.
@Bostongrl25: I think Jacob has shot up recently because of Twilight, which is a shame, because I always liked the name, but I refuse to let anyone even think that I named my child after that book.
Ugh, both of my names are in the top!
Andrew and Emma. I'm hoping it will change by the time my DH and I will have a baby!
My name in my birth year wasn't even in the top 100 and I was so happy that I didn't have any duplicates.
In the mean time... I might have to rethink my name choices, although we are pretty stuck with Andrew (after my brother, who has passed away) Franklin (all boys in DH's family have Franklin as a middle name).
I wanted to name our girl after family members, but they have either been taken or aren't good! Emmadale, Edith, Charlotte (MY pick, but everyone hates it :( ), Adele, Ruth, Leola... Augh! Maybe I'll have to go further back on the family tree!
It also doesn't help that DH and I like traditional names and those always tend to be more popular. AND I have to have a name that means something good! I can't have a name that means "bitter" Lol.
This makes me sad, I don't want to pick a common name, but I looooooooved Noah!!
My name is completelyy unique, i've never met anyonee with my name and i love it ( Tailane) and my top pick for a girl is not on that list ( bianca ) i loove how it sounds and it means 'shining star' which makes it that much more special.... I guess if we have a boy we will probably give him his dad's name Lee, keep it simple ;p, other options r 2 brendon, 3 jayden, 4 alexander ... Who cares if its popular! ;P
I've always loved Isabella, but it doesn't "fit well" with FI's last name. Then Twilight came out, and dashed all hopes I ever had ;)
I think it's interesting that some names that are typically more traditional are becoming more popular lately... in my family, there are Isabellas and Sophias waaayy back.
I'm totally not trying to have kids any time soon (FI and I plan on waiting about 10 years for that!) I've always LOVED the name Lily and it goes really well with his last name. It's also an older name, but not one that seems to have caught on lately!
Also, FI's middle name is Nevin, which is apparently after his great grandfather. I LOVE that name, so if we ever have a boy, we'll most likely use it.
My name is Kaylyn, and I've never met anyone with my name who spells it the same way. I love having a unique name and would never want my kid to be one of a million "Brittanys" in school or anything.
sigh.. i love the name Isabella. serously loved this name for years (my aunt was named isabel so ive grew up loving the name.) it makes me so sad that its the top name but i really like it (so does hubby) so i think we will still use it. hopefully it will die down in popularity but i dont se ethat happen bc of stupid twilight.
I have loved the name Ethan for a long time. Future BIL and his wife are having a boy later this year. I am hoping they don't choose that name, but there are so many names out there that hopefully they won't! FI loves the name Sarah, which I am fine with.
Thankfully most of the names my DH and I love are not on the top 1000 for the past 132 years :) This doesn't mean that they're crazy names- one of them is super popular in Australia lol. My name has never been in the top 1000 either (it's from Shakespeare) and I love that it is so unique, I get compliments a lot. Plus I've never had to deal with someone else having my name which is a bonus. But if you absolutely love a popular name go for it!
