I came off in June and I am still messed up. You just won't know until you come off though. Honestly, if I were you I would stop now and use condoms and/or charting until you're ready.
If you are deadset on being able to start trying in July, then I would come off maybe next month(6 months before) and just use backup. But if you go off in May you may regulate right away or need to wait a few months which could put you past your July timeline. I went off in August and still haven't regulated and while I was always on time before going on the pill, I do have some health issues that may be interferring with regulation.
I would also start charting as soon as you come off the pill so this way you will know if any when you ovulate each month and will have a higher success rate when starting in July.
Yeah I would think about coming off it soon, anytime really! My husband and I are hoping to start TTC Aug/Sept and i'm thinking of stopping BCP in March/April. My doctor said "a couple cycles before you try" is usually recommended, so I think it's personal preference. You won't really know until you go off them how your body will react, so if you are set on TTC in July I would think about coming off them anytime and start keeping track of your cycles. :)
Good luck!!!!!
I agree with the PPs. I would think about coming off in the next month to give yourself time to regulate, in case you DO need that time. I took my last active pill October 29 and am still trying to figure my cycles out.
Thanks for your advice everyone! For those of you who are waiting for their cycles to regulate, I hope your bodies figure things out soon! I am now definitely leaning towards coming off BC sooner rather than later.
@roxy821: 6 months before sounds like a good time to me. Thank you!
Ahhh it's crazy how real this is becoming!!
@skipper2010- 6 months is usually a good guideline too because you would think about seeing a doctor if you didn't regulate by then. This way you will certainly be on target for your 2011 goal. Good luck!
@skipper2010: Hi there, my gp and my endocrinologist both said the same thing.... which is that even if there are issues ovulating, for most women there is a spike in fertility in the first cycle aftre stopping BC. I was told it is okay to try right away. I am on my last pills, first TTC cycle is February 2012. I am going to be charting my temp and doing everything else that TCOY says to do so I guess we'll see. I'd like to take advantage of this knowledge because I have PCOS.
I am not sure how that translates for you, I just thought I would share this with you.... If July is your set first TTC month, stopping right now but using other barrier methods and seeing if you ovulate or not might be the best option for you. By the time July rolls over you'll know if you need help or not.
Looking back, I wish I had come off a few months sooner than I did, if that's any advice!
I went off birth control in September 2011 thinking it would take me a long time to regulate (I was on the pill for about 12 years). My cycles were 20 days, 26 days and then we weren't too careful for the following month and... BABY! lol So just wanted to throw my experience into the mix that it doesn't always take forever!
@Littlebean912: Thanks for sharing your experience. You're right, it could go either way. We would like to stick to our timeline, but if we got KU sooner we would be more than ok.
I was in the same exact boat as you because we will be TTC in April 2012. I was VERY irregular prior to BC so I'm sure I won't be regular after BC. I decided to get off of it now and use charting/pull out until then. I just want to optimize our chances and I figure that getting pregnant is more important to me (I was told that due to a procedure I had when I was 12 I would have a difficult time conceivinig) than being able to drink at my wedding.
Personally, I wouldn't want to conceive the first month after going off-- I just feel like I'd want to artificial hormones out of my system. But tons of people do and it's not a problem, it's just me. I'm planning to stop the pill 4-5 months before TTC and start charting as I come off. I'm also really nervous that it will take a long time to regulate, since I wasn't regular when i started the pill 8 years ago and I probably have endo, so who knows.
If I could have a "do-over" I would have come off my BCP at the same time I did, but I would have started TTC right away (we used back up for a couple months, thinking I should regulate first). I never regulated and now I will be starting Chlomid soon.
I'm one of the ones who hasn't regulated quickly coming off -- on day 62 of my first 'natural' cycle after 10+ years of being off the pill. I'm a healthy weight and had regular cyles before the pill. You might be regular right away, but if you really want to start in July it might be wise to go off sooner rather than later. You don't have a whole lot to lose.
As a bonus I feel so much better off the pill! It's almost a natural anti-depressant. I didn't realize how much the pill affected my moods for the worse.

DH and I are going to start TTC in July. I was originally planning on coming off BC pills in May, but now I'm wondering if I should do it sooner in case I don't regulate right away. I'm torn bc I've heard somewhere that sometimes it's easier to get KU shortly after stopping BC, but then again what if I don't regulate right away? To those with experience, if you were me when would you stop?
