If it were me, I would go Valo all the way.  They do a beautiful job of capturing the little moments that really make your wedding day what it is.  They do a great job of capturing a sense of the mood and emotion behind each picture and your entire day- something that will make it possible to relive your wedding day for the rest of your lives everytime you look at your photos.

Valo, for sure! They have a timeless style and look like they will really capture all the details that you work so hard to come through on your wedding day. They have a very similar style to the photographer that I chose, actually. I spent more on my photographer than I had orignally thought I would, but I think it is one of the most important aspects of your day and you will be glad that you spend the extra money when you look back on your wedding photos 50 years from now. 🙂 Good luck!

valo weddings is definitely the better choice! I could tell right away that their photography and editing is better. I think it’s worth the 1000$ more, to me pictures are the most important part of the wedding!

Sorry to say I voted neither, but will explain….  For me, Valo was out because of the blown out whites.  I like to see detail in the whites.  It isn’t that hard to understand proper exposure.

Blue Sky clearly understands exposure theory, and they had a nice mix of color and b & w which is what you are looking for.  I really like most of their candid shots, which – given your outdoor event – may be just right!  Some of the posed shots look a bit forced, as if the couple was told to pose for a bit too long, and some of the shots are heavily photoshopped and I don’t really think what they did adds to the image.  However, there are many shots which are lovely, the one of the bride against the stained glass window is exquisite.  Of the two, I’d pick this one, but of it were me, I’d look around a bit more.

$3000 is a pretty average photog cost, and they cost more for a reason – they have a more unique point of view. The other guys aren’t bad or anything – their shots just aren’t as interesting/moving. If money is a huge factor, it sounds as though Blue Sky is the better choice. However, I would choose Valo if it were my wedding, and find another place to cut the budget if needed.

If these are the only two available then actually, I’d go with Blue Sky. I dislike the blown out whites of Valo too and they are very detail obsessed (which of course you might prefer). What I do dislike is the snail’s pace that the Blue Sky website runs on my iMac though.

@Eckle:  You get what you pay for. Blue Sky’s shots are all over the place in terms of editing, some are soft (not in focus) . . . they look like photographer(s) who are still trying to figure out exactly what their style is. I’m not personally a fan of Valo’s overexposed style but the work is solid and edited consistently.

Blue Sky may very well be more responsive because they aren’t as busy. I see a wedding posted in July, one in June, and then the next most recent one is in November 2012, and before that, August 2012. They seem more like they are part time with weddings or are having trouble booking them (hence the lower price).

@Eckle:  It sounds like you’ve already made a decision based on pricing so I’m not sure any of our advice is going to matter . . . If it will ultimately come down to price then Blue Sky is your choice. If the style and skill matters, Valo is more skilled (though their photos are overexposed but that seems to be the popular style these days) and seems to have much more experience. Blue Sky doesn’t seem very busy and their images are much more posed and traditional.

My vote is that you check out who we are using as a photog…Bryan Minear Photography.  He’s based in Detroit, but does travel.  The best part is his base package is $2500.  Also, great personality, and he gets your pictures to you FAST.  As in, I got all of my engagement pictures within 1 week of the photo shoot.  (Plus 4 samples the day after the shoot.) You just can’t beat that!

Here are a few examples from our engagement pictures:
