So we are having a band but many people have been telling me I also need a DJ for MC-ing and when the band takes their breaks. Some questions that I would REALLY appreciate some help with:
1) Do I need a DJ with the band?
2) Can you recommend a cheap DJ! If I don’t use the DJ for the whole night will the cost decrease?

@PinkStripes: I think you can probably manage without a DJ if you’re having a band. Can the band frontman act as an MC, asking people to take their seats, advise about cake cutting etc. If your venue has a sound system you could probably hook up an iPod to play some generic background music when the band is taking a break. My suggestion would be to check with the band and see what they suggest, I’m guessing they’ve dealt with these issues before 🙂

What price do you consider cheap?

Yes, what’s cheap to you? Also, I’d ask the band if they could provide emcee services or at least let everyone know when you’re going to be cutting the cake, etc.

@MsGinkgo: The band is actually my friend’s husband’s band and so I asked her a little while back she said she recommends getting a DJ as an MC but said the band does all the in between music via iPod, laptop or whatever
Since we’re already shelling out so much for the band and we don’t need the DJ to work consistently throughout the night I wouldn’t be willing to pay more than $500 for MC services and music between sets.
The way I’m approaching it is that it’s not an absolute necessity so if I can’t get exactly the price I want I can live without the DJ but if I can then awesome!
