I'd have to say succulents, paper cranes (origami), and these cool veggie soups that I reminded myself about today. They're from MSW and they're served as hors d'oervues (sp?) and are purple, green and orange.
Corn on the cob. A little messy for a wedding, but it's my fav food, and I simply must have it. The caterer built our menu around bringing a grill just for that purpose & is grilling a few other items now too .
I love romanesco broccoli! i found out about it when I worked at a farm several summers ago in Vermont. It's totally beautiful and yummy. Also beautiful were the orange and purple cauliflower, wouldn't that look awesome? With heirloom baby tomatoes... man, I may have to call my caterer!!
About the huitlacoche, I'd definitely try it before you serve it. I had some in Mexico two summers ago and it was a little overwhelming (it was served in tortillas with eggs). Just a whole lot of taste going on there. I could tell that it would be something I liked if I could eat it more regularly but it wasn't entirely pleasing on the first go (not bad, just not great).
I love your adventuresome palate! I'd like to incorportate some edible flowers in our salads, like nasturtiums and squash blossoms. And I'll be making a whole bunch of truffles in fun flavors like lavender, chili & cinnamon, almond, etc. :)

So the crazy broccoli looks good but as soon as i looked up corn smut and found this:
Corn smut is a disease of maize caused by the pathogenic plant fungus Ustilago maydis
Ah, corn disease. Yum. It's safe to say I would probably try a tiny bit of it but I'd be a little annoyed if somebody tried to pass it off as mushroom to me without letting me know what it'd taste like. Cuz immediately I"d go "omg this dish is bad" and think something was wrong with it. Stick a label on it and mention flavors, like 'reminiscent of mushroom but stronger' especially since it's used in other foods, not necessarily as a dip.
you could carry that green veggie fungi thing as your BOUQUET it's so pretty! haha
Oh my gosh Vegan, you are so awesome and I love you but your wiki page on corn smut made me vomit a bit! Which is disgustingly awesome!
Haha, I love Melissa's idea.
I really would love to do mini pies as favors. I think that'd be the cutest idea ever. I just won't have the time since they don't keep as long as cookies, etc.

My FH brings up the corn disease all the time! He loves the fact that not many people have heard of it, and that it's considered a delicacy in Mexico. That vegetable is seriously awesome btw!
@lilyfait - sorry to threadjack, but I love pies too and found this link a while ago for instructions on how to make tiny pies in mason jars. You can freeze them for ages, then pull them out and bake them just before the wedding! I'm going to do jars full of red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting for my guests out of town bags.
In terms of things we want to have just because we like them, we're considering doing a couple signature drinks made from hard to find liquors that were popular in the 30s. We're booze nerds, and these are so unique and tasty, and happen to be in our wedding colors too! But since we're already paying $ for the open bar, I don't know if it makes sense to buy more alcohol to bring on top of that... A girl can dream!
@Bakerella- YUM! You just made me hungry!
I want fortune cookies because I love love love them and they have been a fun part of our relationship (FI got one that said he would find "true romance tomorrow" the day before we met- no kidding!) (I know that might be coincidental, but it is still really cool) They don't really match my theme, but Oh Well!
@Veganglam- you made me hungry for green veggies!
Red velvet cake, Spicy Praline Pecans and a Chocolate fountain are a must at our wedding. I totally thought the chocolate fountain was a pipe dream, until I realized the wonders of having a really close gay friend who's WAY into entertaining, he has 2 chocolate fountains of course, it's like having my own personal martha stewart!
I'm making chocolates for the favors. I looooove to make candy, and then I can eat up the leftovers! I'm making salted caramels, chocolate truffles, and peanut butter balls, and putting them on the table in little purple organza bags. It might be a lot to take on, but I have a group of friends willing to do a chocolate-making assembly line!
@ChiCat - that's awesome, thanks! I may just try to make a few of those and see how they hold up.
I'm sure it's not really that random....but I love chocolate fountains!! I would be so happy to have a chocolate fountain with like strawberries and stuff to dip in it! And of course chocolate and strawberries are so romantic :) I know it could get a little messy and I would probably cry if I got some on my dress...but if I was careful it would be yummy :D
i love the idea of a dessert bar or hot chocolate bar. totally not needed but would be so fun... or maybe a popcorn bar? scheesh! too many fun things!!
Maybe not that random but we're having an outdoor/semi-rustic wedding (I guess) so we're doing s'more favors and we'll probably have some sort of bonfire.
Really random (though not small): my FI rented a bouncy castle. Partly because there are going to be a ton of kids at the wedding but partly because he's a big kid himself.
@audamy, I actually think the bounce castle is a fun idea if there are a lot of kids :-)
Oops I forgot to reply to my own thread!
Sorry guys, I loved reading all your comments! I hope you all come back to the bee and show us your post-wedding pictures because I LOVE hearing brides talk about how they are going to personalize their wedding and then actually seeing it in the flesh is just...awesome. You all have some really cool, creative ideas!
We had to have lots of seafood. We are huge fans of seafood, and my aunt lives in wasilla ak, so she is bring a crate of lobster and king crab for us to use at the wedding. Thank goodness or he would have had to settle for just shrimp cocktail from the grocery store.
OMG I absolutely love the idea of little pies in jars!!!!! That is fantastic!!!
@bakerella Believe it or not, but I've heard of The Pop Shoppe here on the West Coast. They carry it in a shop in Vancouver, Wa called Moxie's. We went once while we were living in Portland and I totally picked up a Pop Shoppe brochure and looked through all of their flavors. I'd completely forgotten about it until now.
@Engaged With Love Those chocolate bowls are too cute! I like the chocolate teacups that some bakeries sell now. I actually bought one from Fred Meyer's once to see how they were constructed, but still haven't made it haha
@Chillmer If you need a good salted caramel recipe I have a really good one that I made for Easter dinner and botched while trying to make for my dad's neighbors (makes really good caramel sauce for ice cream though)
I just wanted to add that I came up with-what I think is-a really cool idea for my invites tonight! I think we're going to go old school cookbook and have an artist friend (friendist?) draw a Betty Crocker style border with pretty dishes and candlabras and whatnot around the edges for us. We'll have to see what he can come up with though. Gosh I'm excited just to ask him!
I really want chocolate dipped strawberries that are "dressed" in little tuxes and bridal gowns. I'm hoping I can even get ONE in purple, if it looks ok, for my MOH
Our venue has two firepits, and it's lead me to become semi-obsessive about having s'mores. Mostly because they are the most delicious food on the planet. I've been thinking about making little gourmet s'more favors, with homemade vanilla-bean marshmallows, homemade chocolate grahamn crackers and...I haven't thought about the chocolate yet. Maybe those little single serving Nutella. Mmmmm.
I'm having a photo booth, while not random anymore it's been a must have since the first bridal show i went to. Also I'm having place cards in the shape of lions and personalized table numbers with a male and female lion on them. My married name means lion in spanish,

So, I just discovered the wondrous vegetable that is Romanesco broccoli. It has got to be the most awesome-looking vegetable ever. That is why I have decided to have it at my wedding, as a crudité during cocktail hour (apparently it has a softer texture than regular broccoli and is great for that purpose).
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN SOMETHING THIS COOL.
I don't know how I never heard of this before, because it's an incredibly awesome vegetable and I am very into awesome vegetables and other incredibly awesome vegan-friendly edibles.
Another thing I'm thinking of having as food at my wedding, just because it's cool, is corn smut, or huitlacoche, "a word deriving from Nahuatl reportedly meaning raven's excrement". I've been kind of obsessed with it for over a year now because I can't find anywhere to try it and it's repulsive to think about yet sounds so crazy delicious (I am a FIEND for the edible fungi).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corn_smut
I won't tell anyone what it is till they're diggin' it, I'll just tell them it's a mushroom (unless they have some weird allergy).
Because basically it is!
Also, if you've heard of either of these things, you're my new favorite person.
So is anyone else having something totally random at their wedding that they just NEEDED to insert because it's so cool? Doesn't need to be food related at all.
