I'd say the most common traditions from the States are the engagement ring and wedding band being worn on the left hand, the father giving away the bride, the tossing of the bouquet and garter, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, the first dance, parent dances, and cutting of the cake and feeding it to each other. I'm not sure how prevalent these traditions are around the world, but they're all very indicative of a traditional American wedding.
Lighting a unity candle to symbolize the joining of the couples is also very popular in the States.

I think if you do a search on here, you'll find many responses to this. There are not only cultural but regional differences as well.
Yea, That's what I'm looking for- regional or cultural differences. As an American bride, I know most of the "normal" traditions, but having only attended 1 wedding and 1 other reception in my life I don't really have much to draw on besides my experiences planning my wedding.
Like I keep seeing something about cookies in Philly area and stuff like that. Are there any posts that you can point me to?

@CassidyR: Jumping the broom is a tradition in the African American culture. Also, I don't know if I saw the first kiss mentioned previously and of course consummating the marriage on your wedding night.

Hey Bees!
I am doing a presentation on wedding traditions overseas, and would like to include traditions from around the states.
Can you please post some traditions from where you live? Or things that are common at weddings you have been to?
Thanks!
Cassidy!
P.S- if you have some pictures of said traditions, feel free to send them to me at cassidy henry [at] att dot {net}
