- Wedding: June 2010
I’m a transplanted Hawaiian (born and raised on Maui – Maui no ka oi!) having a wedding in LA/Anaheim & have been brainstorming ideas based on our budget. Please let me know your thoughts on my ideas, & please feel free to share yours…
(Note: we’re going for stuff that leans more toward Local Hawaiian – like kama’aina commonly used flowers, like tuberose, ‘ilima, maile, etc; LESS towards Touristy Hawaiian – like plumerias & dendrobium orchids – wedding colors are spring green & light tangerine & white – think: maile, ‘ilima, & pikake lei)
Centerpieces: Whole pineapples (which represent hospitality & are Maui grown) surrounded by mokara orchids & maile vines or maile/’ilima strands; Protea clusters in vases wrapped in ti leaves; “runners” of Haku leis, lying flat
Personal flowers: Instead of bouquets, the bride & MOH (no BMs) will wear leis & carry maile leis to give to the priest (MOH) & the groom (bride); carry protea bouquets; carry pomanders of pikake with a couple of pin-cushion proteas scattered throughout…Groom & BM (no ushers or other groomsmen) wear maile or kukui nut leis instead of bouts, Dads, too.
Thanks for your thoughts!
