I’ve only had transvaginal ultrasounds for my pregnancy but they hurt me and PAPs have never even made me feel uncomfortable. I think it’s just the pressure/movement (they jam that thing around inside you) and it was quite painful, especially with a full bladder!

@mannellal: Yeah, for mine they went from abdominal striaght to transvaginal so I still had the full bladder. Hopefully that was the cause of the pain and you’ll have a much more pleasant experience (well- as pleasant as a probe in the vag from a stranger can get…)

I’ve had one and I didn’t think it was all that terrible. It’s uncomfortable but not painful, and paps are super painful for me. I guess it varies from person to person. I have PCOS so if you have any questions or need advice feel free to PM me (i live in Pittsburgh too so I know some great doctors that have helped me tremendously!)

Good luck!

They never inserted it into the cervix for me. They looked at the cervix to make sure it was normal but never really messed with it.

I’ve had 2 transvaginal scans, and with both, the probe was not inserted so far that it hurt.  Honestly, if you’ve ever been sexually active, I don’t think it should hurt.  There is KY on the probe and it’s only in the vaginal canal (not the cervix).  Both times, the ultrasound tech actually had me insert the probe.

I had to get this done, and they found out I do have PCOS :/ It was really uncomfortable, and was sore afterwards, but not super painful. I don’t think it goes in the cervix but honestly I don’t know how you tell. I wish you the best, hopefully it comes back good news.

Oh and just fair warning, the probe is about 2ft long, so my initial reaction was WTF?? and the nurse said “just think of your partner” (seriously?)

BUT they don’t put it in all the way, it’s mostly just a handle. But it’s still super scary looking if you don’t know. Also, to keep it sanitary they put a regular ol’ condom on it, which also struck me as weird.

Sorry I keep forgetting more that I should have added :p

They’re gonna stick it straight in, and then they like turn it to look around, and that’s the painful part. but it’s not super bad. I’ve never had a pap smear so I can’t compare it.
