We always book through a travel agent. Our experience has been that they can offer you the same price that you find online, but if anything goes wrong, at least there’s a real person to talk to.

(For our last trip to Cuba, we booked quite far in advance and had to fly out of a different city. We bought our connecting flight tickets during a 50% off seat sale quite far in advance. Then the tour company changed the flight times to and from the resort, so our connections had to be changed. The only way we knew this was because our travel agent called to tell us. she took care of all the adjustments to the connecting flights, and it cost us nothing more than if we had done it ourselves online. she also tried to get the tour operator to cover the change fees. They didn’t, but we weren’t really expecting that they would. At least she tried)

I’d suggest using something like trip advisor to find the resort you like and online travel sites to find a price in your budget, and then take that information to a travel agent.

(ETA: I use Trip Central to find vacation packages. Easy to search by price. Not sure if it’s available in the US, but there are lots of websites like it)

i used costco travel to book part of our honeymoon to Tahiti/Moorea/Bora Bora and they were awesome. (They can take care of everything but I wanted to deal with the flights on my own)

We booked our honeymoon through AAA.  Since we’re members it’s a free service and the lady was really helpful with figuring out various options and comparing resorts and room types and rates.

Well my niece used one, a few years ago, to book her honeymoon.  The travel agent signed them up for some crazy contest and my niece won, all expense paid wedding in Jamaica at the Sandals/Beaches resort in Negril.

So we all used her to book our flights.  She was nothing short of amazing.  We were leaving in Nove and very late in Sept we had to add my 3 year old niece to the deal (long story but after all the money we spent at least she freakin remembers the trip).  The travel agent was able to book her, make sure she sat with us on the plane, and gave us tips on how to get her a passport FAST (temporary emergency custody issue).  She also gave us her number in case we had a problem with said kid getting into Jamaica and getting back into the US.

We use one when we go to Ireland too.  We stay with family there, but the travel agent has gottens us deal on car rentals, and just given us ideas on what tours to skip, what one’s to take etc.

When the ex was stationed abroad, I didn’t use one, because I wasn’t doing any sightseeing without him, and he knew Germany like the back of his hand.  I’d only use one for cruises or international travel.
