I went to Mexico a few years ago and we were able to use our Verizon phones, but we were charged for roaming. That was in 2009, so I’m not sure if thats changed. We didn’t have to tell them we were travelling out of the country

@blondebride2: You phone them and get a temporary plan for the amount of time you are going to be there example a texting and calling plan.  But when you are not using your phone either turn it off or turn off the raoming and data.  As for hotel wifi, no you will not be charged at all for using any wifi out of country thats what its there for….

I think you can get special plans for when you’re out of the country, but I’m not sure if it’s a good deal or really expensive.

When we were in Jamaica, my husband put his iphone on ‘airplane mode’ and used the wifi at the resort.  Putting it on ‘airplane mode’ made it so the only connection was via the wifi.

ETA: there were no extra charges on his next bill.
