Our wedding is out of state so I will need to take my dress on the plane with me. Currently it is inside the David’s Bridal dress bag it came in, but I bought my dress on ebay and the dress bag is ripped in a few places along the zipper. So, I was planning on getting something else.
Question is, should I just buy another formalwear dress bag or one of those folding travel garment bags that I’ve seen that seem sturdier, kind of like luggage? Anyone know what I’m talking about (and if they’d even hold a wedding dress? maybe they are for suits??)??

A travel garment bag will be too short. I am actually rolling my dress (in its dress bag) loosely and putting it in a rolling carryon bag (the biggest they allow). It fits PERFECTLY and I don’t have to worry about it dragging, getting smushed, anything spilling on it, etc.

I would get one of the folding bags so that you can just check it and not have to worry about finding a comparment on the plane (since they fill up so quickly and the stewardesses can’t guarantee you having a space in the overhead bins).

***If you want a story to discourage you from checking it, I can tell you about the month I spent in Africa with no clothes due to lost luggage. NOT a good idea!!!

Yeah I am very scared to check it. I am also too scared to mail it (as a former eBay seller, all I need is for it to be the ONE time mail takes too long or worse!)..
@crayfish: I actually am looking right now in my closet at a rolling bag that is full of wedding miscellaneous. LOL. Temporarily being used for stuff I’ve bought so far. Maybe the dress will fit in there. I should try, because it’s smallish.
This would prevent it from being opened up hopefully and “handled” by security as well, I imagine, if it just goes through the x-ray like any other carry on. I don’t want people touching it! OMG I sound bitchy but really, it’s white and people’s hands are dirty, especially after digging through other people’s crap all day (security)… right?
I’m not sure how wrinkled it will be when I arrive but I guess I should be thankful that we’ll be arriving at our destination a full week before the wedding so there’s plenty of time to deal with that.
@MrsSaltWaterTaffy: Do you think the folding bag will hold the dress? They are the ones that are usually made of luggage-like fabric right?

@crayfish: I am too afraid to check it. I’ve had the experience before and I know that it seems that if you have plane changes your chances increase quite a bit (of stuff getting lost).. so yeah, I won’t be doing that! There are 5 of us traveling together so hopefully the dress can be my carry on and Fiance can carry our other “crap” (gum, books, stuff to entertain the kids, etc) in a separate carry on.
