Help! I had my trial hair and makup appt. this weekend and my hair turned out horrible! I brought pictures of how I wanted my hair and it wasn't even remotely close. Then she tried again - and failed - and actually said, "that's more like prom hair". I got the picture from www.theknot.com! After that she said my hair was too short. (My hair sits just above my bra strap). Can you guys take a peek at the picture and let me know what you think? I really don't want to pay over $100 for a crappy hair do and this person is supposedly the BEST the salon has to offer!
I kind of feel like a GOOD stylist can work miracles. I love that hair design and I think that your hair should be plenty long. Go to a different stylist.
... that hairstyle is complicated, but its something that anyone worth their salt could do. Switch stylists! Do you have pictures of what she managed to cobble together?
Unfortunately I don't, but the first try, was really messy in the back. I realize that style is really popular right now, but it's not what I want for my wedding. The second try looked like an 80 year olds hairdo!! It was pinned up really high in back with these huge rolls that looked like I had a large roller in it! HORRIBLE!
I'll play devil's advocate here and say that your hair might be a little too short for that style. Not only would she have to curl your hair to get it into that sort of design, but then there would have to be enough left over to anchor it to your head.
I do think that she should have suggested alternatives if she believes your hair is too short. Do you have a picture of how it came out?
I am sorry to hear that!! I had a similar experience and am definitely switching!! Do what makes you feel comfortable!
She wants me to come back this Friday for another try - no charge - so I'll be sure to take pictures this time. Her third attempt looked like this:
Let her try again at no charge. If she can't do the style you want or a nice alternative (assuming your hair really is too short), then find another salon and another hair person.
I hate to say this, but how about adding a hairpiece to get the effect better since you don't have that much time left before the wedding?
I actually like both styles before, the second one you posted the best though.
I think that third attempt is actually really cute, but it's nolthing like that first picture! Your inspiration pic is not complicated at all--curls, pinned simply. But your hair may not be long enough to get the fullness of that look since it's above your shoulder (did you mean shoulder bra strap or back bra strap? i'm assuming you meant shoulder)
So my hair dresser for my wedding day was great, I hadn't done a hair trial and poor lady didn't even know I was getting married until I showed up, so I think that made her a bit nervous. I showed her pictures of what I wanted and she started. She did one curl and showed me the back, and I said that's not really what I want, I want it more like . . . so then she changed it and for most of what I wanted different it was spot on the second time, if not she really was good about making it right. I was concerned about little details, like it was too high up and all sorts of little things. It sounds like it must have taken forever, but I was in and out within 45 minutes and really was happy with how it turned out, so maybe you should ask if you can give feedback during the process instead of just at the end.
Whoops, I meant my hair is almost to the middle of my back. The second picture is actually better than what the stylist produced. I even suggested wearing it as a half-do instead and she couldn't even provide an option for that! Is my hair really that short?
Almost to the middle of your back? You definitely should be able to do the first hairstyle (unless your hair is super-thin or something)
I would bring a couple of other styles you like in case your hair literally can't go up into that style, but aside from that, I would consider a new stylist if this trial doesn't go well.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I will find some more hair styles to take with me on Friday just in case she can't seem to get the first one - even though that's really what I want. Here is a half do I like. I can't imagine this one would be too hard:
LOL I actually have that picture saved in my folder from the knot! I love it! I am going to buy a hair piece as well, my hair is medium lenght I say but the piece wll give it thickness.
At first I thought the picture you attached was your hair, and I was like, "What's the prob? That looks great!"
Oops.
Anyhow, I don't even think you should think twice about this. Find someone else. If you think it's crap, and she was not able to work well with you, that's all you need to know. You need to be confident in and happy with your vendors.
Oooh I like the big bun. It's like Carrie's hair from Charlotte's wedding to Trey.
I think any good stylist should be able to create the style you got from theknot. It's not too complex-looking, and it sounds like your hair should be long enough for it. Do you have lots of layers though? Having layers may make things a bit more difficult since your hair would have varying lengths... even so, I think you should try someone else. I wouldn't risk it for the big day! Good luck! :)
Hm... it sounds like it's time for a new stylist. It's nice to be able to have confidence in someone, you know?
Ok i'm a stylist and from what you told me, your hair is long enough. There is no reason why that style couldn't be done on you unless she just doesn't know how. I would go with someone else. Trials are so worth the money, finding out who you don't like is just as important as finding someone you do.
If you stay with her for your wedding day, you'll be worrying the whole time about whether or not she'll nail the look your going for. Don't settle.
Thank you Br1ShiningStar, I appreciate your feedback. Boy do I wish you were in Dallas!
I have picked out about 10 other backup styles just in case.
If you don't feel comfortable with the stylist, try to find another one if there's time. You don't want to be stressing about that on the day of the wedding.
You need to find a new stylist. Your hair is not too short at all for that hair style if it hits your bra. Obviously it wouldnt look the same like the photo, but she should be able to work out something that would be similar and complementing your facial features/shape.
I am a hair makeup stylist and I come across this problem a lot of times (where brides do a trial with hair stylist and they always says it's too short). Something can always be done and they should be able to try, especially for your length.
For example, this bride of mine has VERY short hair (above shoulders) and very thin hair. But we were able to make it work! I've attached photos so you can see how her hair originally is.
Go to a diferent stylist! Search the net for a site that reviews stylist where you live. Whatever you do...def do not pay for something you don't like! Its your wedding day! Your supposed to be happy in all aspects that day!
Your hair is past your shoulders and she couldn't do it?!?! I did something similar to that on a weekly basis a few years ago when I was a cheerleader by myself. It's not complicated! Hopefully she produces something better on your free trial-if she doesn't find someone else.
My stylist's 2nd attempt was on Friday, and I am MUCH happier with the results. Let me know what you think!
the last post you just put up is much much much closer to the picture! i think she finally found the right direction to go with it.
if i was doing the style of the first image for your here is how i would attack it (in as simple terms as possible0:
- roller set your hair to help creat volume
- back comb the top for added volume and staying power
- build a base at the nape of your head
- leave sections on the sides of the front of your head to be pulled back later
- from the base at the name start forming rolls and pinning in place
- half way through bring the side pieces that were left out back to the nape and pin in place
- finish remaining pieces that need to be rolled and pinned
- place in decorative details
- smooth out all fly aways
the inspiration photo can definately be done with your hair length, as prooven with the second attempt trial.
I think that last trial looks a lot more like your inspiration photo. I love the curls--very romantic!
Very pretty, it looks like she gets it!
If there are things you want changed about it, be very clear with her and have her confirm she can make those changes for you. But it looks great even just as it is, I love the romance of wedding curls!
It looks like she ate her wheaties with that second trial! She did a great job! You must be so relieved!
Thank you all for the feedback! I think she was MUCH closer this 2nd time. I will pass along your specific instructions Anvil Chick. Maybe with your help she will get even closer to my picture!
I'm a hair stylist and that first style is definitely do-able with your hair length. I've actually done french twists with hair that was cut in a bob, barely longer than the hairline in the back. Not easy, but do-able!
Your second trial was close, but still not quite what the original picture shows. The curls need to be tighter barrel curls (where the hair is wrapped around itself on the curling iron like a sausage) and then pinned in place without upsetting the shape.
Honestly, some stylists are just not good at updo's. Some are stronger with cutting or coloring, and some have the creative gene where they can see a picture and create what they see with the hair their dealing with. And like most people, stylists don't want to admit their weaknesses.
There's nothing wrong with finding a new stylist (or asking the manager of the salon who does the best updo's in their opinion), especially if it's only just for your big day . It's funny, most people think that their stylist will be mad if a client goes to someone else, but from a stylist's perspective, it's completely up to the client who they want to do their hair, and if they want to go to someone else, that's totally up to them. The only time it bothered me was when a client went to someone else that completely f-ed up their color or cut and they came back to me to fix it!
Thank you for the reply jackimiec. I agree, the second trial was closer, but still not exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, this stylist is supposedly the best my salon has and with 3 weeks left until my wedding, I don't think I have the time or the money to find a different stylist. My last attempt will be next week Wednesday when I have another stylist at this salon trim my hair and do highlights. She also does updos so I may just ask her opinion and see if she can get any closer to what I really want.
I agree the 2nd attempt is better. I have the same problem. My hair is ALMOST sholder length, but not completly. I don't know what to do. I think the styles i like are all of hair that is much longer! Good luck, I can't wait to see your wedding pics! :)
Yeah...the second trial was DEFINITELY an improvement. I'm not sure what she was thinking with the first one.
OK, here is my third attempt at my wedding hair. I like this one much better! It is closer to the first updo picture I posted, The stylist will smooth out the curls more on my actual wedding day. What do you guys think?
