I think a very nice cocktail dress woud be perfectly ok. However, you may want to drop an email to someone in the bride's circle just to double check.
@ValMicLev: Cocktail attire would be appropriate for this type event. You may be a bit "over the top" in a formal dress in Idaho in late September and particularly for an outdoor event.

I am invited to a wedding (cousin of my boyfriend) out west in 2 weeks (late September). The wedding is taking place in the bride's parents backyard. They are a very wealthy family and run in that type of social circle. The wedding invite called for "black tie with sneakers". The bride and groom will be wearing sneakers to the reception. They don't want women in heels since it is in their backyard. The wedding is at 5pm on a Saturday night. In this case, should i still wear a long dress and just wear wedge heels? or can i wear a fancy shorter dress (knee length) with either wedge heels or flats? Really need help!!! Thanks!
