So, I have been swooning over this Essence of Australia dress forever!! I had some time to kill last night and was next to the shop that carries it. I figured I’d go in for my very first dress alone because I had no idea what to expect.
OMG I left so depressed. The dress looked AWFUL the fabric was way to heavy and I’ve never felt fatter in my life!!!
New vow: no more dresses until I lose 20lbs. I am so glad I was alone.

It may have just been a cut and/fabric that is not good for you. I originally thought I wanted a mermaid gown, I ended up just looked like humpty dumpty. I had to try on alot of dresses til I found the correct silhouette for me.

Don’t let that one dress get you down on shopping for your wedding gown. Sometimes dresses look A LOT better in an ad or hanging in the window. Like @tksjewelry said probably not the right fabric, shape, etc.

I agree- thought I’d look marvelous in a natural waisted ballgown- ended up looking pregnant. Thought I would look huge in more fitted gowns and ended up looking so much better/thinner in them! Just try on a bunch of different sillhouettes and don’t get hung up on what you thought you wanted before you started shopping

the dress you’ve been dreaming about just might not be the right style for your body.
it took me a while to find my perfect style. and the dress i had thought would look horrible on me actually was the best for me!

Don’t let the one dress get you down and you don’t necessarily have to loose weight before you try on dresses again. It’s just a matter of finding a style that fits you, so when you go for a ‘real’ appointment be open to trying on different styles/fabrics. You’ll find one that is right for you. 🙂

I agree, I thought I wanted an empire waist, flowy dress. Well when I tried then on I looked like a pregnant whale! They gave my no shape (unless you count marshmallow as a shape). I ended up getting a drop waist, lace up back, form-fitting on top then flows out at the bottom dress. I LOVE IT and most off all I feel like i look amazing in just the way I am currently!

@ms.oregon.state: The same thing happened to me. I thought I knew what dress I wanted (flowy a-line), and then I got in there and felt huge in that style. I ended up with a fit and flare, and never thought I would be wearing that. In fact, I said I don’t want a fit and flare when I got there.
Don’t let the dress get you down. It may just not be the style for you. Keep trying on different styles. I know you’ll find something you love!

It could have just been the cut of the dress or the fabric that was used to make it. Im sorry you had a bad experience!!

I don’t know a single person that ended up with her online dream dress in real life. I know mine was a hot train wreck. Least flattering dress of all time on me. I ended up with a dress that is EVERYTHING I said I didn’t want. You should have tried on some more! I promise something else will look great.

I can totally relate. Trying on wedding dresses completely changed my outlook on what my perfect wedding dress would be. I was very certain of what I wanted, but when I tried it on, it looked horrible. The consultant suggested another dress, which was one that I had seen online and hadn’t really like at all, but when I tried it on, it did amazing things for me, and was actually gorgeous on my big plus sized body. I wish I had a picture of me in it, but the salon wouldn’t allow pics. I haven’t put my deposit down on it yet, but I will be doing that very soon. BTW my dress is a Private Label by G #3352

Its still early! Love can change. 🙂
My first dress love was Amsale Tyler. Think big ball gown. Ball gowns make me look loony. Surprisingly I love Mermaids. Enter Amsale Elle. My new love…
Go to another salon with one other person and try on every silhouette. You will be surprised at the outcome!

try not to let it get to you. i know, i know, easier said than done, but there seriously is a dress out there you will love that will make you look amazing. echoing those above, i don’t personally know anyone who tried on their dream dress and it looked perfect, regardless of her size. you”ll find something beautiful and how this first dress looked won’t make any difference.

Thanks ladies!!!!! Next time I will let the consultants do their job. This was a quick drop in to try on my dream dress.

you just described my first dress trying on experience. i had been dying to try on Nicole Miller gowns and on an impromptu trip to NYC, i was able to go alone to try on THE dress i thought would be mine! and i HATED it! i could not look more disgusting in it! so i just had to find a style that worked for me because clearly using the models online as prototypes didn’t work. so i dont think this means you wont find a dress you love, you just have to keep trying on different styles until you find some that you love on YOU!
