I'm sort of in your boat. I just started looking and I am just now discovering this. I'd say, bring along the friend that can fit in the size 10 sample dress and make your prediction from there. Most shops that I've been to thus far have been nothing but samples. But, you're in NY and I'm in TX!! It may be different :)
Well, I don't think it's really all that different from shopping for wedding dresses. Most places only carry sample sizes, and you have to make your decision based on whether or not you like the sample on yourself.
But, if you really want to let your BMs try on a dress close to their size, I know David's Bridal carries various sizes in BM dresses.
David's Bridal carries them in all sizes... I know some (including me) have had mixed results with them, but I got a bridesmaid dress there for my friend's wedding for $80... which is nice when you're asking several friends to spend on it. I saw dresses in everything from 2 to 20 there which was great!
i've been in a few weddings where i didn't go with the bride to try on a dress. they usually just take their maid of honor and she lucks out, b/c it looks good on her so we all have to wear it! i don't think it's the best thing to do in the world, but i feel like it's normal so the girls wouldn't feel bad if you only took one.
Thanks for the feedback so far! The pickle (sorry can't think of a better word!) is that everyone is wearing a different style dress. I think it's a good idea to have person as the model, though in this case it wouldn't work. :-(
Someone suggested finding similar dresses in bigger sizes (possibly at a place like David's Bridal) and then getting a sense if the style itself works. Or maybe just hold it up against people.
I don't know...any other thoughts? :-)
I think Alfred Angelo also carries larger sizes in their BM sample dresses....a lot of times if you go into a shop where they dont carry the size you need you can unzip the back of the dress and hold it up to yourself and kind of pull and see what the dress would look like. :)
When I went to try on bridesmaid dresses, it was the bride, the other bridesmaid, and myself. The other bridesmaid was a nice size 4, whereas I'm more a size 14, so the dresses fit us very differently. Most of them I couldn't even zip up allt he way *cries* whereas she had to have them all clipped in the back to get an idea of what it would look like if it was her size. We just tried our best and settled on a dress that looked okay on both of us. We ended up getting the same style, although another style actually flattered my body-type better. The style we got looks better with the bride's dress, so I sucked it up and got it, though I know I probably will never wear it again.
Good luck!

Though I haven't started yet, I'm concerned about the process of picking out the brides maid dresses. In picking out a bridesmaid dress for my friend's wedding, all the bridal shops only had sample sizes, which would at the most fit a size 10.
Only one of my bridesmaids would fit the sample size, and I'm concerned about the other 3 not being able to tell if the dress styles actually work, because they can't try them on. Are there bridal shops that provide more than just the sample size, or is eyeballing and using judgment required?
Thanks! :-)
