Darling Husband and I spent all weekend brainstorming for names for our new dog. She arrives tomorrow and we’d like to spend more time with her before we settle on a name. We spent some time with her on Saturday (when we adopted her from the pound); she’s a sweet, lovable girl.. 3-4 years old, and a Rottweiler with traditional Rott coloring (mostly black, with some brown around the face).
Darling Husband really liked “Sadie”, and started calling her that when we first met her, but I wasn’t crazy about it for her and I thought it was kind of hard to forcefully say (when she needs it!) 🙂
We want a name that can be forceful and isn’t hard to pronouce – ideally, two syllables.
We came up with “Bella” – which we both love… and then I randomly said “Luna” – and Darling Husband fell in love. We have been waffling back and forth on those two. “Harley” also entered the conversation, but that’s a distant 3rd.
Any thoughts on Bella or Luna? I think Bella is a little easier to say. I was telling someone this morning we might name her Luna – and they thought I said “Luda” – Like for Ludacris… lol.

I voted for Luna, for no other reason than I love it 🙂

I feel like there have been soooo many ‘Bellas’ emerging in pets and babies since the twilight series came out. Harley reminds me of harley davidson motorcycles. I’m with your Darling Husband Luna for the win!

I feel like Bella is sooo over done these days. Although its a lovely name. I like Luna. What about Lula?

I voted for Luna because I feel like every other pet is named Bella and Harley recently. And because we almost named our cat Luna (went with Bellatrix instead).

I don’t know, if it were me, I’d hold off until you spend more time with her. One of those names might just fit (or maybe you’ll find that she likes one more than the others! Dogs are very smart) 🙂

I love either Luna or Bella, but my vote went to Luna because I’m not sure if you want your dog to be associated with Twilight. It’s unfortunate, but likely. I also kinda like Luna for a mostly black dog, associating the black/night with the moon, Luna.

I definitely voted for Luna! Bella has gotten a little cliche, IMO, and all I could think of was Twilight.

This might sound weird, but I think dog names with “hard” consonants (like B, K, D, T) work better for calling than ones with “soft” consonants (like H, L, J), so just by that alone, I’d go with Bella.

I like Luna. It reminds me of my childhood dog, her name was Lulu. I agree that Bella is over used.

I voted for Harley before I read your post. I think it’s so badass!

I voted for Luna but actually really like Sadie. I think any name can be said forcefully enough to get your dogs attention. She will learn your personal tone of voice and be receptive to that.
All that being said, I would also suggest that you wait until she’s with you and see what name just fits her. Our most recent addition is a pitbull puppy who we named Lily. It wasn’t a name we had even tossed around before bringing her home but after about a day and a half, that was her name.

Does she already have a name that she answers to? It’s easier to teach a dog a new name if it’s similar to their old name.

I agree with others and the Bella/Twighlight thoughts. That is all you will ever hear about when you tell people her name.

Well I’m a little biased because our dog is named Luna, so that is my favorite! I also like Harley, but I agree that you should wait until your puppy arrives and spend at least a day or so together before deciding on a name. Our Luna was named Lilypad by the humane society, and we thought about shortening it to Lily, but after spending a little bit of time with her we realized Luna fit her so much better! I have to warn you, though, of the nicknames family and friends have come up with (Loony, Lunatic, etc). Also, after we named her Luna it suddenly seemed like *everyone’s* pet was named Luna! But I suppose that would probably happen no matter what name we chose 🙂 Anyway, congrats on getting a dog!
Oh, and here’s a gratuitous puppy picture of our Luna!
