We went to Bermuda in September (14-19) for $2150. including all costs (airfare, hotel, eating, souveniers, excursions, etc)
We booked a package on expedia which cost about $1700 for the airfare and hotel, plus trip insurance (incase of hurricane) and airport transfers to and from the hotel (about 45 minutes ride). Before paying I googled "expedia coupon code" and found one that got us $100 off!
The weather was warm and humid, a bit windy and rainy when we first arrived but was better for the rest of the trip. Beaches were gorgeous, it was fun snorkeling over the coral reefs, the Bermudian people were so nice and our resort was great! We stayed in a private cabana, bought bus tickets to get around, and bought food from the local grocery store (about 10 minute walk) to cut down on the expensive eating out.
I highly recommend!! Here is a picture I took of our resort:
We've done Costa Rica, Jamaica and Puerto Rico for all a good deal under $3000 including all costs. Jamaica though was probably the most 'traditional' trip we took though, meaning no camping or hostels, but not in a touristy part of Jamaica. Costa Rica if you can get good tickets down (we got free by taking a bump on our Puerto Rico trip) can be quite affordable especially if you're willing to not have things super fancy.
@bluebutterfly: How long are you looking to take the honeymoon for? I believe Sept. is during hurricane season, so you should be able to get some good deals.
Have you thought of a cruise? That's all-inclusive and you can usually get a cabin for around $2000 or less!
Alot of all-inclusives in Mexico would fit in your $3K budget. Checkout bookit.com
You might want to look into Vieques. A little island off the coast of Puerto Rico. Airfare is usually quite cheap down there, it takes a bit of time then to get to Vieques but it's really beautiful there. They have a bioluminescent bay and kayaking and pretty water. On the way back you to San Juan you can stop by the rainforest, which doesn't have a ton of animals but is really pretty for a hike. And Old San Juan is very nice. It's a fun vacation but it definately would take a bit of planning, which might be a big downside if you just want to relax. Vieques itself would be great but I think flights in are quite a bit more, but might be worth it to take a look.
Check out cheapcaribbean.com They have great prices on all-inclusives.
We had friends that paid $2,600 including airfare for their honeymoon to Cabo.
You could also do a mexican/caribbean cruise for cheaper than 3K!
Trip advisor is a great place to track down affordable gems. The B&Bs or cottages or villas or whatever that keep a nice price but are great.
thanks ladies for the input...@hotchild I didn't even think of hurrican season! Hope it's not a problem :/ we were hoping to take a week long trip
Check out turks and caicos maybe? You can totally do less than 3,000 and it's about a 3 hour flight from NYC (still in the same time zone even!). They have two all inclusive resorts plus a lot of other hotels that would cut your price down if you don't care about all inclusive (though I've heard the food there is expensive).
You might want to check out the Yucatan Pennisula in Mexico too. My friend did her honeymoon there. Not sure how much but it sounded quite reasonable and very pretty.
Dominican Republic! I've been there like 4 times and it is amazing! find a travel agent by you and talk to them about an all inclusive package, they have them for all the hotels there. Punta Cana is my favorite town in Dominican Republic, there is a new-ish hotel called Paradisus Palma Real, they might have some good deals. Go on TripAvdisor and reseach that area for a nice hotels so you can tell them where you want to stay. From Miami the trips are about 900.00-1,200.00 or so per person and that includes food, drinks, hotel stay and flight with the all inclusive package for 7 days!. I bet they have good deals from NY too =)
I second the Dominican Republic! Friends and I went for under $1,000 each for 7 days. We left on a Wednesday and came back on a Wednesday (sometimes going on off days like that can also save you money). It was all-inclusive and beautiful!
I would also recommend all-inclusive to Mexico. We went to the Riviera Maya for 10 days for $5K. We had upgraded our room too - so if you went for a shorter time and downgraded your room, I think you would be able to do it for $3K! Check it out!
We had an amazing honeymoon in the Bahamas for under $3,000. The key for us is we went on a cruise that departed from our city (Baltimore). I think our breakdown of costs was...
2 people on 7 night carnival cruise to Bahamas (including taxes, fees) $1,200?
2 excursions (x2people) $400
Spending money (gratuities, alchoholic drinks, souvineers, etc) $800?
$2,400?
These numbers aren't exact but they are very close to what the atual numbers were. Cruising really helped us save because food is included and there were no travel costs for us since there were cruises leaving from our city. FYI - Our cruises were purchased through cheaptickets.com.
We're going to jamaica couples getaway for 7 nights, all inclusive for under$3000!
I originally wanted to go to Hawaii but its more expensive and FI wanted to go out of the country.
We booked a cruise 7 night to the western caribbean for $2100. We got an aft view balcony, you can get a room without a balcony for as low as $500 a person.
You should easily be able to book an all-inclusive trip with airfare to the Caribbean for $3k. Since you are traveling during hurricane season, you will get off-peak pricing.
I found cheapcarribbean.com to have the best package prices. We booked a 5 night stay at an all-inclusive resort in Jamaica (Couples Tower Isle) for about $2500, and that's including all taxes, transfers, airfare. All of the alcohol, food, activities, and local excursions were also included in that price at this resort. We're going in February when lots of people are trying to escape winter weather so prices are high, but I would think it's a lot cheaper in September.
so with all this talk of hurrican season...I am a little bit naive or unaware of these things..does it mean it's a bad time to go there (will the weather be horrible?)
i also was going to post "cruise!" as we are going on our western caribbean cruise this weekend! =D
as far as hurricane season, i live in FL and there hasn't been much of a hurricane season the past few years, but those things are erratic and can change at any time. hurricane season runs from may to november though, so there is not much time where it isn't storm season, though storms can happen even when it's not the season for them.
if you're concerned, many packages have vacation protection you can add on.
Depends on the time of the year, but totally doable. I just looked for me and the Boy for a trip to Cancun for March and it was $1400 r/t including airfare for all-inclusive for a week at the Grand Oasis through Expedia.
Check out Mexico. If Cancun is too crazy for you, Playa del Carmen is in the same area and price range, but a little less party-hardy. There's lots to do. Some of the best snorkeling is a short ferry ride away in Cozumel and there are Mayan ruins nearby.
I second Vieques!!! We went there the beginning of December 2009 and had a BLAST! SO pretty!!! It's quite doable for under 3K. Our plane tickets were around $650 (roundtrip for both of us!) and my mom's hairdresser has a great place in the middle of the island she rents out. You definitely need a car (about $65/day) and then of course you have to pay for meals. We had some pretty fantastic meals there... message me if you want any more information! I can't stop thinking about it.
3,000 is more than enough money for a nice trip
We went to Puerta Vallarta for 10 days. Our flights were about 700 total
Our hotel was $600 for the 1st 2 nights....we stayed at a FANCY place
Then so we could afford that, we when spent the rest of the time at a cheaper hotel for $500 for the remaining 8 days
The fancy hotel was were Mrs Cookie stayed. Villa Premiere Resort & Spa
Also...we wished we had known..but next door they own a cheaper hotel that is REALLY nice but only about $80 a night on the off season.
$3k is more than enough..just pick a place closer.....mexico if on the west coast....bahamas if you are on the east. And maybe consider a night or 2 at the super fancy place and the rest at a regular hotel. That way you still have the honeymoon fantasy feel...but in a way that you can afford
We are going to Ocho Rios Jamaica staying at Couples Sans Souci for $2700 which is all inclusive (airfare, meals, drinks, activities, free massage, etc) Booked on cheapcaribbean and we are going the end of August.
you could go on a cruise! food & board included..prob cost about 2,000?
Mexico for sure. West Coast or Gulf side, you should have no trouble staying within your budget.
What about Cancun? Here is an all inclusive resort that my FH and I found for $2K. It doesn't include airfare, but includes everything else.

Has anyone else managed to have a wonderful honeymoon on a 3k budget? FI and I are hoping to travel somewhere warm/tropical, but want to keep our budget for the honeymoon under 3k for everything (plane fare, hotel, food, etc) Ideally we are trying to look for trips that would cost less than 3k so that we have extra spending money for the trip.
Any bees out there honeymoon to a tropical place for under 3k?
