Here's my attempt at a tutorial for my DIY table numbers. Feel free to adapt it to whatever works for you. We only did one side of the post, but you could do both if you choose! You could also use flat pieces of plywood or something and frame them for a different spin on it! Good Luck!

    Materials Needed:

    • 4x4 post
    • Wood Stain [optional]
    • Hammer
    • Panel Nails
    • Scissors
    • Printer
    • Paper
    • Crochet thread [kite string or yarn could also work]

    Directions

    1. Cut 4x4 post to desired heights & stain. We used a 12 in height so that it could be seen over the mason jar decor on the table. We then beat up the post a little with the hammer & stained it lightly with the dark stain (following directions on can)

    2. Print out your numbers. We made ours 3.5ins tall & used this free font.

    3. Use the panel nails to nail the numbers onto the posts. We placed a nail on each point and added extras in between on longer sides. The more nails you use, the more options to have when it comes to stringing the posts, which will make your numbers fuller.

    4. Tear off the paper and tie the string onto one of the outer nails. Do not cut the string off of the spool until the very end because you never know how much you will need.

    5. Follow the outline of the nails so that you have the basic shape. Be sure to push the string all the way to the bottom to give you room to loop it in the next few steps.

    6. Start with one nail as your center point. Loop the string from that nail to a surrounding nail and back. Repeat this for all surrounding nails. Be sure to continue pushing the string as far down as you can go.

    7. Repeat step 6 for each nail, continuing to push string down.

    8. After looping all of the nails, follow the outline again, looping the string between each of the outer nails to recreate the outline. Don't forget to also do the inner section too if the number requires it.

    9. Trim the string and tie a knot around of the nails to secure the string. After tying the knot, cut the string as close to the nail as possible to hide it from plain sight.

Makes me wish I was going to have more tables! Might be odd to have table numbers with 3 tables... :S

Happened to see this now and I am in the middle of a similar project. Just wondering, did you tap the nails in further once you put the string on? I have most of my nails in and am only wondering how far in I should hamer them before starting the string step. I am using colored embrodery floss and got the inspiration from some Pinterest state nail art. Also, as a tip, IKEA nails (the ones that are for the back boards for BILLY and such) are perfect for such a project and always seem to be left over in my house.
