We went about 4 months out for the tuxes. I think they usually need to be fitted by about a month and a half before the wedding at most tux rental shops.
I'm not sure what the difference is between ushers and groomsmen, do the ushers not stand up with the men? We have been trying to figure this out for months. As of now, all men participating in the wedding will be wearing tuxes but that could change when FI goes shopping next month.
the groomsmen stand with the groom in front for the ceremony and usually have more responsibility and are closest to the groom. the ushers only responsibility i know of is to seat the guests- but if i'm wrong someone please correct me! all should get boutonerres to wear.
It's never too early to go to a tux shop and select your styles and let them know who's in the party. The guys should be fitted anywhere from two months to two weeks before the pickup date; any more and there's a chance they'll change size, any less and they may have to pay a rush fee. Shops that carry their own inventory are a bit more lenient on the late measurements, catalog showrooms a bit more strict. Ushers most often will be dressed similarly to the groomsmen, with perhaps a different vest and tie combination; keep in mind they'll all be in photos, so you want to coordinate them.
